Soho House Membership: Everything You Need to Know

Soho House History: What is the Soho House?

Soho-House-Babington

Soho House was founded in London in 1995 by Nick Jones, starting as a private members’ club for those in the arts and media industries.

It quickly became a hub for creative minds to collaborate, socialize, and unwind in an environment that marries comfort with sophistication.

The concept has since expanded worldwide, with each Soho House location maintaining the brand’s distinctive ethos.

“Each one has its own identity, but our mission has always been the same: to create a home away from home for our members.

My Soho House Story

My Soho House membership!

Of course, it’d be a bit weird for me to write a whole article about the Soho House without being a member myself. So what’s my Soho House story you may ask?

After I went full-time with my blog I begin craving a creative community that went past the online world, especially people from different creative backgrounds outside of being a content creator.

And that’s when I applied for the Soho House.

Being in London (its birth location) it was a member’s club that was always in the back of my mind, but if I’m honest I didn’t think I had enough going on to get in.

Fast-forward to the winter of 2022 and I was accepted into the Soho House in just two week’s time.

Looking back and understanding a lot more about how the membership process works I think I definitely got lucky on timing when I applied. But I also learned from the inside exactly what they’re looking for in members which opened my eyes to a lot of what it really takes to get a Soho House membership (and yes, yes I’ll be sharing!).

Since I’ve joined the Soho House in London it’s become everything from my gym to coworking space, and above all a super cool and accessible space to meet and connect with like-minded creatives — not to mention all the inspiring events, talks, restaurants, and getaways like Soho Farmhouse, but we’ll get there.

Where Are the Soho Houses?

Since its London beginning the Soho House has spread its wings across the globe, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia, and more. Here’s where to find them all:

Europe:

Middle East

North America:

What are the Perks of Being a Soho House Member?

Shoreditch-House-Soho-House

Once you’re in you’ll find there’s oodles of perks to being a Soho House member (that yes, do make those membership fees worth it).

Becoming a member of Soho House isn’t just about gaining access to a physical space – but getting the opportunity to immerse yourself in a world built and catered to creatives, which if you’re a creative you know isn’t always easy to find.

From exclusive events that spark inspiration and conversation to luxury amenities that enhance your lifestyle, here’s an in-depth look at all the perks that come with being a part of the Soho House community, in my opinion:

Curated Events and Workshops

Soho House is renowned for its diverse range of events and workshops that cater to a myriad of interests.

From intimate talks with industry leaders to hands-on creative workshops, these gatherings offer a chance to expand your horizons, learn from experts, and connect with like-minded creatives in intimate Soho House settings.

Networking Opportunities

Networking was a big part of why I joined Soho House, and even though you’re not allowed to just walk up to other members all willy-nilly (read more on the house rules here), the events and certain membership spaces like the ones at Soho Works encourage mingling and collaboration between members.

Although networking seems a bit daunting, it’s really just forging connections at the end of the day, and with the caliber of people that the Soho House attracts, you’re bound to meet at least one person over the course of your membership that’ll help shape or boost your personal or career growth in a super positive way.

Not to mention the Soho House often collaborates with members internally for events and even business opportunities.

Exclusive Venues for Work and Play

One of my favourite parts of being a Soho House member is utilizing the workspaces.

They’re renowed for them of course but the Soho Houses are genuinely beautifully designed — making them perfect for working, socializing, and relaxing in luxury.

From well-appointed lounges that encourage collaboration to tranquil spots that foster concentration, their venues offer an environment that adapts to your needs throughout the day.

Luxurious & Exclusive Accommodation

Some Soho House locations feature boutique hotels that are an extension of the member experience.

These hotels have quickly become Soho House highlights in their own right (like the iconic Soho Farmhouse) and are great for a staycation or using when you travel.

All their accommodation reflect the same thoughtfulness and attention to detail found throughout the standard Houses, plus you’ll receive an exclusive members rate when you book.

Endless Dining Opportunities

Full disclaimer that being a member does not get you discounts on food & drink in the houses (except on certain days if you’re under 27) however the Soho House restaurants and bars are pretty fantastic.

From innovative menus crafted by skilled chefs to handcrafted cocktails like their famous Picantes, they make a great backdrop for your business meetings or meal with someone worth impressing.

Global Membership Benefits

The best part about having a Soho House membership is that you’re not limited to a single location.

With a global network of Houses, your membership grants you access to exclusive spaces, events, and collaborations in various cities around the world.

This interconnectedness can open doors to new creatives across the globe alongside endless networking opportunities.

Wellness and Fitness

Certain Soho House locations offer wellness facilities including a pool (always free to use for members), gym (always free to use for members), and spas (with a fee), that allow you to rejuvenate your mind and body the Soho House way.

The facilities here are pretty top-notch, and simply put, there’s not many places you can go to a high-end gym, co-work, and end your day with a dip in a pool and cocktails on a picturesque rooftop bar all under the same roof.

Is a Soho House Membership Worth it?

As you can see a Soho House membership isn’t a mere card; but an invitation into a life enriched by creativity, connections, and curated experiences.

So if you’re wondering if a Soho House membership is actually worth it, I’d say yes, but only IF you utilize your membership.

This means attending the spaces throughout the month to get your money’s worth, using the gym and pool if they have one consistently, co-working in the laptop areas when you can, and most importantly, attending events to connect with fellow community members.

Is it Hard to Get a Soho House Membership?

Soho-House-Stockholm.

With any private member’s club, the aura of exclusivity might lead you to wonder about how accessible it is to actually become a member.

While Soho House maintains a commitment to fostering a vibrant creative community, getting in isn’t an impossible task, especially when you compare them to other private members’ clubs.

It’s more about aligning with their values and culture rather than having a laundry list of accomplishments, so I’d say it’s fairly easy to get into the Soho House if you have a strong application (and depending on when you apply, patience).

Types of Soho House Memberships: Soho House Memberships Explained

Soho-House-Paris

➡️ What Is the Soho House Membership?

The standard Soho House Membership will give you access to all the perks of being in the Soho House community at either one house or all the houses (with different prices for each).

➡️ What Is the Under 27 Membership at the Soho House?

Soho House understands the importance of nurturing young talent (and not breaking their wallets).

As such, the Under 27 Membership offers the same privileges as a standard membership but at a reduced rate for individuals under the age of 27 — making it a fantastic opportunity for budding creatives to engage with seasoned professionals and access exclusive events.

The best part? The discounts apply until your 31st birthday!

P.S. – If you’re on the fence about joining the Soho House and are under 27, my suggestion is to join now! Otherwise, you’ll miss out on years of savings if you delay your membership.

➡️ What is the Soho Friends Membership?

The Soho Friends Membership is a unique option for those who share the Soho House spirit but might not fit the traditional member profile.

It grants limited access to certain areas and events, offering a taste of the Soho House experience without the full commitment.

➡️ What is the City Without Houses Membership?

For those who don’t live near a Soho House location but still crave a connection to the community, the City Without Houses Membership is your best bet.

It allows access to Soho House events in your city, providing an opportunity to network and engage without the commitment or price tag of a full membership.

Plus you’ll get access to the Soho Houses when you travel!

➡️ What is a Soho Works Membership?

For creative professionals looking for a productive and inspirational workspace, I definitely suggest going for the Soho Works Membership.

The worker-friendly membership provides access to beautifully designed coworking spaces, meeting rooms, free breakfast, tea and coffee, and networking events.

P.S. – If you’re already a Soho House member you’ll get a significant discount on your Soho Works membership — I’m joining this month!

Soho House Restaurants & Hotels

As you’ve probably seen the Soho House isn’t just about lounges and workspaces; it’s a lifestyle brand — meaning food and drink is one of their highlights.

Many locations include exquisite restaurants and boutique hotels, offering members an all-encompassing experience of luxury and comfort in Soho House fashion.

P.S. – They also offer exclusive member rates for their hotels!

How Much Is a Soho House Membership?

You can’t talk about the Soho House without talking about their infamous membership fees.

Plain and simple becoming part of the Soho House community comes with an ongoing financial commitment.

Membership pricing varies greatly depending on the city and the type of membership you choose, which you can calculate on their pricing page:

But to give you some examples, for 2023/2024:

  • Soho House Standard Membership with access to all the houses: £2,750.00/$3500 a year
  • Under 27 Membership with access to all the houses: £1,300.00/$1656 a year
  • Soho Friends Member: £100/$130 a year

You’ll also need to pay an induction fee upon joining, which varies per house (but the standard one is about £500/$630)

P.S. – For Soho House memberships, your induction fees can be redeemed at the Soho House restaurants! Just make sure to spend it within your first few months of joining.

What About Plus-One? Can I Bring Guests to the Soho House?

If you’re worried about being a lone wolf with your shiny new Soho House membership, don’t worry.

Members can bring up to three guests to the house, giving them a glimpse into the community you’re part of.

It’s a fantastic way to introduce your connections to the Soho House community, plus refer them later down the line should they choose to join too (it’s a lot easier to get a Soho House membership if you already know an existing member).

How Do You Apply for the Soho House?

Soho-House-Rome

Applying for a Soho House membership is a pretty straightforward process, but it always helps to be prepared. Here’s to apply for a Soho House membership in a nutshell:

1️⃣ Head to the Soho House Application tab

2️⃣ Select your desired location and membership type

3️⃣ Complete the application form in full with a clear reason as to why you want to join, how a Soho House membership would be beneficial to you, and how you would be beneficial to the Soho House community

Of course, this all sounds easier said than done. So make sure to read my Soho House Application Tips for a full breakdown on how to nail your application!

How Long Does a Soho House Membership Approval Take?

I wish there was an easy answer to this, but it quite truly can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months!

The timeframe for approval varies on a number of factors such as location and membership type, down to simply applying around the time when the committee meets for approvals.

Generally, the review process takes a few weeks, during which the Soho House team evaluates your application.

Is It Hard to Become a Member of the Soho House?

While exclusivity is part of the allure, the process of becoming a member isn’t intentionally difficult.

Soho House aims to curate a community of like-minded individuals, focusing on passion and creativity rather than a stringent list of qualifications.

In all honesty, I think I waited too long to apply as I wanted to prove I had ‘been in the creative field‘ for long enough first.

But looking back I genuinely don’t think it would’ve mattered in comparison to just having an authentic application and a clear dedication to be part of the community.

What is the Vibe Like at the Soho Houses?

The Soho House definitely has a stereotype of being pretentious, but is it true?

Being in the Soho House atmosphere there can be a ‘cooler than cool’ attitude in the air, however this is quickly replaced by the friendly staff and genuine creatives that are looking to make connections in the houses.

In terms of aesthetics — cozy comfort, artistic flair, and exclusive is the vibe here.

How to Make Friends at the Soho Houses: Top Tips for New Soho House Members

As a new member, the prospect of mingling with like-minded individuals might seem exhilarating and a tad nerve-wracking. But you can easily and seamlessly weave yourself into the fabric of the Soho House community with a little effort.

Dive into Events and Workshops

Your journey towards connection starts at the array of events and workshops Soho House offers year-round.

Whether it’s an engaging panel discussion, a yoga class, or a music event, these gatherings are designed for members to come together, interact, and bond over shared interests.

Attending Soho House events also provides an easy icebreaker for conversations with other members.

P.S. – If you’re looking for a good intro – try asking about their most recent creative projects and how their experience at the houses has been/how long they’ve been a member etc.

The Power of Small Talk

We get it, small talk might not be everyone’s favorite cup of tea, but it’s an invaluable tool for forging connections.

Case and point? I was at 180 House getting some work done when a fellow member was looking for a seat and asked if she could sit next to me. We ended up chatting the whole day and she even introduced me to a few of her friends who worked for a super well-known cosmetics company.

Now of course, I didn’t go into that day expecting to make connections. But due to the community nature of the houses, it’s not uncommon to make new connections this way.

Use the Member’s App

In the Soho House app itself, you can connect with other members virtually which is a perfect way to meet fellow community members without having to break any Soho House rules.

You can connect instantly or send a message to their profile which I would definitely utilise to share a sentence or two about yourself and a common interest you saw on their Soho House profile.

Nurture Your Soho House Relationships

Building relationships takes time and effort, wherever you make them.

Like anywhere once you’ve had those initial interactions, keep the momentum going.

Luckily you both being Soho House members makes it pretty easy as you can connect at future events, for co-working, or a nice swim and Picante by the pool.

But Don’t Forget to Create Your Own Soho House Story

In the sea of trying to make friends at the Soho House, it can be easy to forget about your own journey as a member.

Remember that your Soho House membership is truly what you make it.

If that’s to use it as a workspace and take advantage of the gym and pool (I support you on this) then do you boo!

But equally, if your main goal with your membership is to network and build connections, then the houses are your oyster too — it’s all about what works best for you.

FAQ: Soho House Membership

Q: Should I get Soho House Membership?

A: The answer to this really lies in your goals, interests, and aspirations. If you’re seeking a community of creatives, exclusive events, and inspiring spaces, a Soho House membership would definitely be worth pursuing.

But in terms of pros and cons of being a Soho House member, if you don’t think you’ll utilise your membership enough to justify the cost, then I don’t think a Soho House membership is worth it.

Q: What are some important Soho House rules I should know before joining?

A: I think most importantly that you:

A) Can’t take any pictures or videos in the Soho House, especially to post to social media

They take this very seriously and will publicly call you out for it and potentially revoke your membership, I may have learned this in Paris….(for taking a selfie with a friend!)

B) Can’t approach members randomly

This is a bit of a controversial one but again, to respect member’s privacy you can’t just walk up to someone randomly and say ‘Hey! Aren’t you XYZ from XYZ show?’ or similar as it can be seen as disruptive to members.

With that said conversation and networking is highly encouraged at things like community events or activations for Soho Works.

Q: Is Soho House really exclusive?

A: Mostly yes, Soho House does maintain an air of exclusivity but they also put a lot of energy into fostering a diverse community of creative individuals, from a variety of both personal and professional backgrounds.

Overall it’s about sharing common interests and values rather than having a rigid list of credentials to get in.

Q: Are kids allowed at the Soho House?

A: They are, but each Soho House has very specific rules on where and when you can take children into the various parts of the houses. Best to call and read your house-specific rules before your visit!

Keep in mind they’ll need a Child Soho House Membership to access the houses too.

Q: What is Included in a Soho House Membership?

A: A Soho House membership grants you access to a single or all the houses (depending on your choice), including exclusive events, networking opportunities, beautifully designed spaces for work and leisure, restaurants, bars, and often boutique hotels.

The specifics will vary based on your chosen membership type and location.

Q: How Does Soho House Make Money?

A: Soho House generates revenue primarily through membership fees and associated services in event bookings, accommodation, and dining (a lot from dining!).

Q: Who are Soho House Members?

A: Soho House members come from various backgrounds within the creative industries – so think artists, writers, designers, entrepreneurs, and 9-5 professionals.

The common thread here is pretty much always a passion for creativity and collaboration (and maybe Picantes).

Q: Wait, did Prince Harry and Meghan meet at a Soho House?

A: Yes, the royal couple had their first blind date at Soho House’s 76 Dean Street in London. Talk about being a hub for connections! (and apparently romance too…).

Q: Can You Pay Your Soho House Membership Monthly?

A: Soho House typically offers annual membership options, but some locations may have more flexible payment plans such as monthly payments.

It’s advisable to check with your preferred location for specific details and keep in mind you’ll have to pay an induction fee upon joining.

Q: Is there a dress code for the Soho House?

A: Although there’s no strict dress code for the Soho House, there is a bit of an anti-dress code with members advised to keep it “relaxed”, so dressing overly professional wouldn’t match the vibes here.

Q: Does Soho House Membership Include a Gym?

A: Some Soho House locations do include fitness facilities, however, the availability of a gym may vary depending on the specific location.

Q: Why Get a Soho House Membership?

A: Networking, an elevated lifestyle experience, exclusive events, access to a high-quality gym and pool (at some locations), and making an investment in my personal and professional growth were my reasons!

Q: Is a Soho House Membership Tax Deductible?

A: The tax deductibility of a Soho House membership can vary depending on your country’s tax laws and regulations — so you’ll need to speak to a tax professional on this one!
