Wimbledon, a suburb in South West London is the perfect blend of city and country, and one of my favourite SW neighbourhoods.

It’s best known for hosting the world-famous annual tennis championships, but there’s a lot more to this charming district than just tennis.

Here’s all of my favourite things to do, see, and enjoy in Wimbledon, from a SW Londoner.

🏨 P.S. – If you’re looking for a hotel in Wimbledon, I highly recommend Hotel du Vin Cannizaro House.

Wimbledon Park is one of the largest public parks in London, known for its serene landscape, historical architecture, recreational facilities, and an array of wildlife.

A haven for waterfowl, bird species like swans, geese, and coots are easily spotted around the beautiful 12-acre lake.

In addition to the natural glory of the lake and its fauna, the park’s grounds are scattered with different tree species, contributing to the biodiversity of the area.

It’s a lovely natural retreat, right in the heart of the city.

Wander Through the Saturday Farmer’s Market

The Wimbledon Farmers Market is a delightful destination for food lovers, cooking enthusiasts, and anyone seeking to practice sustainable consumerism in London.

Every Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm on Wimbledon Park Primary School’s grounds, the market plays host to around 20 stalls selling a diverse assortment of products ranging from fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, and fish, to more unique items like fresh flowers, artisanal cheeses, baked goods, and homemade jams.

Wimbledon and Putney Commons are two neighbouring open spaces located in South West London, combining to cover a vast area of around 1,140 acres.

Historically preserved and offering a perfect spot for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, these green lungs of London guarantee relaxation, exploration, and an array of activities for any age group.

Wimbledon Common is known for its tranquil environment and lush surroundings – i.e. the perfect location for a walk, a jog, or a family picnic.

Its sister green space, Putney Heath, is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and hikers, while the grounds of Putney Lower Common sit near the River Thames, with a peaceful riverside environment to waste a SW day away.

Admire the Buddhapadipa Temple

The Buddhapadipa Temple is an authentic Thai Buddhist temple nestled in the heart of Wimbledon, London.

It’s the first Buddhist temple traditionally constructed in the United Kingdom and the home of Theravada Buddhism in London.

Buddhapadipa (meaning “The Light of Buddha”) Temple was first established in London in 1966 and later relocated to Wimbledon in 1976.

Set amidst four acres of beautifully maintained lawn, it provides a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Take in a Show at New Wimbledon Theatre

New-Wimbledon-Theatre

The New Wimbledon Theatre is also worth the visit — a key cultural hub in Wimbledon, hosting a diverse range of performances, including musicals, ballet, opera, and more.

As one of the largest theatres in London, it is particularly renowned for its annual family-friendly pantomime, a tradition it has maintained since its earliest days.

But in my opinion, the New Wimbledon Theatre is more than just a theatre; it’s a piece of living history that continues to entertain and inspire, creating unforgettable experiences for all who pass through its doors.
