When people think of North London, Hampstead usually gets all the attention.

But head a bit further up the hill and you’ll find Muswell Hill, a charming neighbourhood that makes it easy to forget you’re in London.

I first ended up here on a weekend wander when I lived in Hampstead, and I’ve been smitten ever since.

If you’re after a quieter pace, lovely cafes and leafy streets to explore, you’ll love Muswell Hill.

Here’s how to spend some time in the neighbourhood — from a Londoner.

TOP HOTEL IN MUSWELL HILL

Looking to stay in the area? The best hotel in Muswell Hill is King William IV Pub & Rooms.

✔️ A short walk from Hampstead Heath
✔️ Above the King William pub on the gorgeous Hampstead High Street

1. Muswell Hill Road / High Street

One of my favourite things to do in Muswell Hill is simply walk along Muswell Hill Road.

It’s a short but busy stretch, lined with independent shops, cafés, and restaurants — the kind of place you can easily lose an hour or two without trying.

For coffee, I like Doppio, a small local spot that does a strong flat white and lovely pastries. Or head to North & Ten for a fresh bagel, Muswell Hill style.

2. Highgate Wood

If you’re keen on a respite from the city, Highgate Wood is just up the road from Muswell Hill’s high street.

It’s 28 hectares of ancient woodland, crisscrossed with walking trails and dotted with cricket pitches and picnic spots.

I’ve come here on slow Sunday mornings for a coffee-in-hand wander, but you’ll also see plenty of families and North London joggers making the most of the shade.

A lovely green escape and one of the best things to do in Muswell Hill!

3. Muswell Hill Restaurants & Cafes

Lucky for you, Muswell Hill’s food scene covers just about everything — from tapas to sushi — all within walking distance of the high street. Here are a few favourites.

La Lluna

A Muswell-go-to Spanish restaurant serving classic tapas and sangria. Be sure to catch their Flamenco nights on Thursdays!

Bob’s Cafe Muswell Hill

Casual all-day hangout for breakfast, sandwiches, or a late brunch. Friendly staff and big portions. A local favourite!

La Porchetta

An old-school North London pizzeria with wood-fired pizzas and hearty pasta. Family-friendly, and a neighbourhood staple for years.

Sushi Zento Muswell Hill

A lovely choice for Japanese in the neighbourhood — with delicious sushi, delicate sashimi, and bento boxes.

Miller And Carter Muswell Hill

A reliable London chain steakhouse with a great wine list — makes for a lovely date night!

Crocodile Antiques

A timeless Muswell Hill cafe that’s part vintage shop, have a browse and a pastry here!

5. Friends of Muswell Hill Library

If you’re local to the area, the Friends of Muswell Hill Library is a must-add to your Muswell Hill ‘know how’.

It’s a volunteer-led group that aims to support the services provided by the beautiful and historical Muswell Hill Library through hosting events, fundraisers and local activities.

If you join, it’s a great way to make a positive impact on your fellow Muswell Hill’ers and indulge in a love of literature. Great for meeting new people too!

6. Fortismere Food Market

Fortismere School, Tetherdown, Muswell Hill, N10 1NE

There’s nothing like getting fresh, local produce from your own community, especially in Muswell Hill.

So a visit to the Fortismere Food Market is a must.

Open every Saturday from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, the market has everything from organic produce, to fresh baked goods, and gourmet cheeses.

Pop in to support local and stock up on some essentials for the week!

7. Sunshine Garden Centre

Durnsford Rd, Bounds Green N11 2EL

If you’re after plants, pots, or just some inspiration for your garden (or flat windowsill), Sunshine Garden Centre is worth the trip.

It’s an award-winning shop in Muswell Hill with rows of flowers, shrubs, seeds, and tools — plus staff who don’t mind answering questions from a plant newbie like myself.

There’s also a café on site if you fancy a coffee and cheeky slice of cake before heading home.

8. Everyman Muswell Hill

Fortis Green Rd, Muswell Hill, N10 3HS
Everyman Muswell Hill

For my film lovers, Everyman (a beloved London cinema chain) has a fab one in Muswell Hill — set in an exquisite Grade II-listed building.

Here you’ll find the latest blockbuster flicks, independent films, and retro screenings. As well as a Spielburger Kitchen, and a cool bar dripping in film memorabilia.

Tuck in post Muswell Hill exploring for a movie, a glass of wine, and food and drink delivered right to your seat.

9. Explore Highgate & Hampstead

When you’re in the lovely Muswell Hill, you should definitely take the opportunity to explore the popular North London neighbourhoods of Highgate and Hampstead.

The Flask Pub, an old-world charmer in Highgate, is just a short bus ride away and oozing with history.

And really close by is the hauntingly gorgeous Highgate Cemetery (it’s a bit like stepping back into Victorian London).

From here, you can take a leisurely stroll or a quick hop on the 210 or 143 bus towards Hampstead Heath.

Finally, you simply can’t visit Hampstead without popping in for a mosey around Hampstead Village. Beautiful cobbled streets, small boutique shops, independent cafes and more — a proper postcard-picture.

10. See the Views from Alexandra Palace

Hampstead-to-Alexandra Palace-Walk

Muswell Hill is famed for its views, including being just a stone’s throw away from Alexandra Palace.

The Victorian concert hall is also home to some incredibly swoon-worthy views across the city, so don’t leave the neighbourhood without having a peek for yourself!
