1. Mercato Metropolitano

42 Newington Causeway, SE1 6DR

Mercato Metropolitano is by far the coolest spot in Elephant & Castle, and you’d be hardly forgiven by your friends for not knowing about it.

Housed in a formerly abandoned paper factory site, it’s a trendy food market with cuisines from around the world designed to boost social activity and, most importantly, promote sustainability.

They do this by giving a space to artisans and traders with small scale production processes, independent producers and even local brewers to do their thing right in front of the customers. Plus they have classes that go from pasta making and mixology, to food waste awareness. So you can be part of the hustle!

Come here and enjoy good food or a tasty local beer and you’ll soon find yourself surrounded by chatty Londoners trying to relax after work or uni with friends and good music.

2. Burgess Park

Albany Rd, SE5 0AL

Burgess Park is one of the most significant green spaces in Elephant & Castle, always busy with locals walking, having picnics and getting their workout on.

It’s fit with a fishing lake, pitches for football, cricket and tennis, a BMX track and several gardens with colourful wildflowers. It’s also well known for the Burgess Park West, a multi-million pound project that added new facilities like a playground, outdoor gym space, and a centre for hosting events and activities to the area.

To top it off they offer community festivals, sports meets, and cultural celebrations. Time for a trip!

3. Imperial War Museum

Lambeth Rd, SE1 6HZ

The Imperial War Museum (IWM) in London is dedicated to preserving and presenting the stories of those who lived, fought and died in conflicts involving the UK since World War I.

It’s a must visit in Elephant and Castle for any history lover, as you’ll feel like you’ve turned back the clock with the extensive collection of war-related art, exhibits and artefacts. All of it there to provide a powerful insight into the impact of war.

I’ll admit the collection is pretty impressive (I’ll never forget seeing the giant tank and aircraft for the first time up close). I’d also highly recommend the Holocaust Exhibition here, as it’s an honest and powerful exploration of the horrible genocide.

4. The Cinema Museum

2 Dugard Way, Renfrew Rd, SE11 4TH

Film enthusiasts, gather around. The Cinema Museum is the paradise you were dreaming of, and it’s in Elephant and Castle!

Housed in a famous building that was Charlie Chaplin’s childhood home, the museum has an extensive collection that captures the history and magnificence of cinema from the 1890s to the present day.

It has everything you already love: from projectors, vintage cinema seats, posters, usher’s uniforms, and film production props, to an impressive array of stills and scripts from the best features that probably inspired your dreams.

Plot twist! Not everything ends there. The Cinema Museum also hosts film screenings, talks, and other special events that offer a deep-dive into particular genres, time periods, or filmmakers. And it’s a charity, so your support genuinely makes a difference to their institution.

5. Southwark Playhouse

1 Dante Pl, SE11 4RX

Continuing with the artistic side of Elephant and Castle, Southwark Playhouse is another icon of the area, this time on the theatre side.

This incredibly quirky theatre venue is famous for giving opportunity to new talent of all kinds (actors, writers, producers…), presenting a mix of productions you’ll hardly find somewhere else: from big and loud to small and intimate.

Notable shows include “Parade,” “In the Heights,” and “Titanic: The Musical,” which secured its reputation as an influential player in London’s off-West End theatre scene. And now you may have the opportunity to watch the bloody LIZZIE, a true crime punk rock musical! This one’s genuinely a killer.

6. Elmer Trail

Elephant Rd, SE17 1GD

The Elmer Trail is a fun thing to do in Elephant & Castle, regardless of how old you are.

Happening at the Elephant Park, it’s a self-guided walking route where you explore the community-designed sculptures that celebrate diversity and inclusivity.

It started in 2019 to celebrate Elmer the Elephant’s 30th birthday, a beloved children’s character from the popular book of David McKee. Some talented local artists then joined forces to create 10 Elmer statues scattered on the street and green spaces in the area.

There’s a guided map that explains the whole purpose of the family-friendly activity, leading the participants in their own discovery and very colourful journey. So get those feet stomping and keep your eyes open to address (literally) the elephant in the room!

7. Jazz and Dinner at Toulouse Lautrec

140 Newington Butts, SE11 4RG

Veux-tu danser avec moi? Toulouse Lautrec is a popular French restaurant-bar in Elephant & Castle where you can do just that, while picturing you’re in the romantic capital with your loved one.

Named after the esteemed French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and located in a converted Victorian pub, this is one of the best jazz spots in the city.

Its atmosphere emulates the bohemian Montmartre district in Paris. And if the vibe of the place is not enough, then the food will be the one transporting you to our neighbour country. The Jazz Club upstairs, though, is the star of the show, where you’ll listen and dance to the world of jazz, blues, and soul.

Best news is that if you don’t want to wait until the evening to enjoy this place, they host bottomless brunches and even painting classes that I’m certain you’ll love too.

8. Ministry of Sound

103 Gaunt St, SE1 6DP

Electronic music fans, it’s time to rave! The Ministry of Sound is a whole institution in the dance music and club culture scene, so if you’re into that world, I bet you know what I’m talking about.

This venue, created with the inspiration of New York’s “paradise garage”, attracts top DJs and dance music enthusiasts from all over the world. It has a state-of-the-art sound system in each room, including the huge Box, 103, Baby Box, and the Loft; all of them with unique shows of their own.

If you’re into these night events, you’d be thrilled to know it’s not the only big venue in Elephant & Castle. You need to check out Corsica Studios. They’ve been delivering countless events for electronic music lovers for 20 years, with the same quality as the world-famous Ministry.

9. The Ministry Fitness

79-81 Borough Road, SE1 1DN

The popular Ministry of Sound in Elephant & Castle is also responsible for incredibly original amenities and experiences. And one of the most popular is The Ministry Fitness, a loud workspace gym that will elevate your workout session to an upbeat.

Its spaces and classes were designed to make fitness fun and enjoyable by lacing workouts with pulsating music (sometimes performed by live DJs) that will motivate you to push your limits like you do on the dance floor. Honestly, you won’t even feel like you’re working out.

From cardio-intensive routines, spinning and High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) to calming yoga sessions; you’ll 100% find something to fit your taste and fitness level — and have fun while you’re doing it!

10. Four Quarters

20 Ash Ave, SE17 1AZ

If you’re a fan of arcade gaming, then the Four Quarters is the bar (yes, bar) to go in Elephant and Castle.

This paradise for gamers takes you back to the 80s and 90s with their vintage video games, authentic cabinets and retro consoles that include classics like Pac-Man, Street Fighter, Donkey Kong, Space Invaders and many more.

Of course the games are perfectly paired with a well-stocked bar, so you can enjoy a cheeky drink while you beat your friends. Actually, they don’t need to be friends, there’ll be more than enough fun strangers to meet here too! Challenge accepted…

11. East Street Market

East St, SE17 1EL
east street market elephant and castle

One of the oldest shopping destinations in South London is the popular and diverse East Street Market.

Conveniently placed on a busy street, the market operates from Tuesday to Sunday. It offers fresh fruits, vegetables and food items that suit every need of the multicultural community.

It’s not only cheap, but ‘exotic’. So if you’re looking for those special and hard to find ingredients to spice up your meals, you’ll most likely find them here.

Because it’s frequented by many locals, it’s also a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the local cultural and fast pace of Elephant & Castle. Some also believe this is the spot that inspired the fictional Lambeth Walk in Charlie Chaplin’s film ‘The Kid’!

12. The SoLo Craft Fair Shop

14 Ash Ave, SE17 1GQ

We’re all about supporting local businesses at Candace Abroad. And The SoLo Craft Fair Shop comes with the sole purpose of uniting us with them.

This independent retailer is the definition of London’s local craftsmanship and artistry. And their place in Elephant and Castle is one of several shops and markets that it operates in.

You’ll find everything here from wonderful clothes, gorgeous jewellery, original homeware, quirky accessories, colourful prints and art, ethical skincare and more unique things for you or someone you love to get their hands on. All made by independent artisans, designers and artists.

13. Latin American Food Scene

If you arrive to Elephant & Castle and you immediately feel the rhythm in your body, there’s a good reason behind it: the neighbourhood has a big Latin American presence!

So, yeah, this is one of the best areas in London to spice it up.

From authentic Colombian dishes to traditional Peruvian fare, Elephant & Castle has something for every Latin food lover. Here’s a list of some of the best restaurants from the hot continent.

Paladar

A stylish and contemporary option for those that can’t decide on a specific Latin American cuisine. Their menu comes with a blend of culinary cultures and ingredients of every region, all in a relaxed setting.

Leños & Carbon

This charming restaurant comes to represent Colombia — known for their succulent grilled meats and seafood, cooked on coal. I’ve visited with a Colombian friend, who said it’s a real slice of home. Real deal this one!

Restaurante-Bar La Fogata

This lively restaurant couldn’t decide between Colombian, Peruvian and Ecuadorian. And who blames them? They also offer live entertainment and music, so you’ll have time to shake those hips too (after you’ve eaten of course).

Coma Y Beba

Another gem for food enthusiasts offering a fusion of flavours from across the continent (including Argentina). Casual and delicious!

Costa Azul

‘Mouth-watering’ is what I like using to describe Mexican food. Now can you imagine having it blended with Salvadoran too? Heaven. From tacos and enchiladas to Pupusas and more…

14. Elephant & Castle Restaurants

It’s not all about Latin American cuisine in Elephant & Castle, though. I know no one’s complaining, but just in case you’d like something different, here’s another list of the best places to try.

Kaieteur Kitchen Original

I know I said something different from Latin American, but this one needs to be in the list as it specialises in Guyanese and Caribbean food. You’ll need to pick from Pepper Pot, Curry Goat, and Fried Fish. Good luck!

Murger Han

This unique experience has a menu focused on the traditional cuisine of the Xi’an City region of China – particularly known for its Biang Biang noodles and Murger (slow-cooked meat in flatbread).

Theo’s Pizzeria

Once you try their pizzas cooked in a handmade Neapolitan wood fired oven, there’s no coming back. You’ll hardly find anything that beats their chewy crust and soft middle in London.

Hoa Phuong

This delightful Vietnamese restaurant serves everything, from classic Phở and Bánh Mì to a variety of noodle dishes and stir-fries. Yum!

15. Elephant & Castle Pubs

You can expect Elephant & Castle, a placed named after a popular public house, to pay homage to the quintessential British culture. So here’s a list of the two must visits while in the area.

Elephant & Castle Pub

The one and only popular pub in the neighbourhood has been serving since 1765. It’s highly frequented by professionals and students in the area, so it’s a local like no other.

Orbit Beers Brewery

If you haven’t noticed by now, Elephant & Castle loves its music. And what goes best with it? You guessed it, a cold pint. Inspired by European brewing traditions, you’ll have a great (and loud) experience here.

16. Elephant & Castle Brunch and Cafes

I can’t finish a list of things to do in Elephant & Castle without the neighbourhoods brunch and coffee options. Here’s some of my favourite spots:

Tupi Elephant & Castle

How does brunch taste in South America? Well, you can find out at this restaurant, fusioned with Brazilian, Cariocan, and European influences.

Art Cafe London

Like the name suggests, this restaurant will offer the sizzling charm of an European-style café with a twist + art exhibitions spilling out the place!

Bobo Social Elephant & Castle

Finally, this stylish Elephant & Castle spot stands out for its innovative and sustainable approach to food. From charcoal toasted sourdough to Dutch-inspired Babka French Toast, you’ll have more than enough options to start your day in the neighbourhood on the right foot.
