➡️ What is the difference between Hackney and Hackney Wick?
Hackney is an entire borough of London, while Hackney Wick refers to the specific district within that borough.
➡️ Is Hackney Wick worth a visit?
Without a doubt. Hackney Wick is worth a visit for its outstanding street art, the amazing clubs and bars, the artistic community shown in the local markets, and the unique natural spaces, like the famous River Lea!
➡️ What is Hackney Wick famous for?
Hackney Wick is famous for its talented street art scene, creative community, trendy eateries and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, where the 2012 Olympics took place.
➡️ Is Hackney Wick a nice area?
Yes, Hackney Wick is considered a nice area, but there are a few sections that can be a bit sketchy at night (particularly near the river) so just be mindful if you’re out exploring late. Neighbourhood wise though, it’s very artsy and urban…and yes, gentrified.
➡️ Is Hackney Wick safe?
Hackney Wick is generally safe; however, like any urban area, it’s always pays to have some wit about you and basic street smarts (like not leaving your phone on tables etc.)
1. Hackney Wick Street Art

Hackney Wick is basically an open gallery. Its street art is one of the most iconic in London; and, like Brick Lane and Shoreditch, it attracts thousands of Londoners and tourists alike keen to soak in some of the creative scene here.
What I love is that the street art in Hackney Wick truly covers the whole area, distinguishing itself from the rest of the city.
Here you’ll see an insane mix of styles — from abstract, figurative, surreal, and political. The techniques and themes are as diverse as the people living in East London, and the artwork evolves with them as well.
Some of the most iconic murals can be found near Hackney Wick Station, along Wallis Road, White Post Lane and Rothbury Road. But you can also find incredible art in The Lord Napier, the Old Ford Lock and on White Post Lane.
2. River Lea Walk

One of my favourite things to do in Hackney Wick (although, East in general is a great place to do it) is walk along the soothe of the river. In Hackney Wick, this means the River Lea.
P.S. – Yes, this is the one that Adele references in her song. And yes, it’s as beautiful as the melody.
This is one of those East London spots that takes you out of the rush of Hackney and into the quiet and contemplative.
A stroll here promises to be adorned with natural landscapes, quirky original boats and lovely swans, ducks and herons. Plus tons of walkers, cyclists and joggers enjoying the view. Time to be one of them!
3. Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is one of Hackney Wick’s greatest treasures (well, after Stratford).
It was originally built for the London’s 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, but now it’s a world-class public space boasting beautiful parklands, waterways, playgrounds, sports facilities and tons of artwork scattered about.
Not only is it a park but a significant platform for artists, a tourist spot for athletes, a great venue for music festivals and business expos, and a symbol of environmental commitment in East London.
The views from here are also prime, making it the perfect place to soak in the East London atmosphere.
4. Victoria Park

One of the most loved local parks in London is located in East, and that’s the gorgeous Victoria Park.
Commonly referred to as “the People’s Park” or just “Vicky”, it’s one of those huge parks that are busy yet completely tranquil.
It’s next to the canal, full with British wildlife, and designed to run, play with kids, skate, play sports or just admire the ornamental lake while sipping a coffee from The Pavilion (I’m a big fan of the latter).
You can also explore some historical highlights here including the Old English Garden, the Chinese Pagoda, and the Burdett-Coutts Fountain. Plus incredible music and cultural festivals if you time your visit right.
5. Victoria Park Market
Between Bonner Gate and Gore Road, E2 9JW
If you indeed do go to Victoria Park and you’re there on a Sunday, make sure to visit Victoria Park Market.
On from 10 a.m. to around 3 p.m., it’s one of my favourite things to do in Hackney Wick, with the park fully transforming to a community hub for local traders (and their delicious food).
I’d recommend buying a gourmet cheese and pairing it with some artisanal bread, then heading to Victoria Park’s green space to savour it all.
They also encourage zero waste, so if you can bring your own containers even better!
6. Vintage Shopping in Hackney Wick
Discovering East London’s hidden treasures is easy when you’re in Hackney Wick. Especially when it comes to vintage shopping.
Vintage Hackney Wick is one of the best well-kept secrets among vintage lovers, and for good reason.
Here you can find an exciting mix of clothes, accessories and random stuff from all across London.
Otherwise you can pop into the greatly named Somewhere in Hackney Vintage, for ‘affordable yet luxury’ finds. It’s basically a museum of fashion history, with vintage clothes spanning decades.
Gold Dust Vintage also rises above the typical vintage store, serving as a boutique with high-quality garments from prestigious designers and popular brands — worth the trip!
7. London Centre for Book Arts
Britannia Works, 56 Dace Rd, Bow, E3 2NQ
The London Centre for Book Arts is an artist-run, open-access studio dedicated to book arts and is one of the most unique things to do in Hackney Wick.
A lot of artists, designers and book enthusiasts come here to learn and practise artisan book-making skills, which is really niche — but interesting for anyone with an open mind to learn.
Their workshops also focus on different aspects of book production, and are open to all levels.
If you just want to go and do your own thing, they also provide specialised book-making items that would otherwise be inaccessible to many. So make sure you pop in!
8. The Colour Factory
8 Queen’s Yard, E9 5EN
Fancy a nightclub this evening? A live music venue? A food court? An artistic space with cultural diverse events? Well The Colour Factory is all of the above in one place.
The revived warehouse with shipping containers became a powerful symbol of urban regeneration in the East End, where local talent could show their best work in a chilled and supportive environment.
It’s fun, inspiring and has the best reputation in the art community in Hackney Wick. Check them out!
9. Zero Waste Shopping Hackney Wick
Besides being highly artistic, Hackney Wick is also an ultra eco-friendly conscious community, and this becomes clear when it comes to shopping.
Many stores here encourage the conscious reduction of waste, particularly when it comes to single-use plastic.
One of the most popular zero waste stores in the area is Refill Therapy, offering household essentials, including food, cleaning products and personal care items (you can bring your own containers or buy reusable ones in store).

10. Hackney Marshes

Hackney Marshes is a vibrant blend of sport, recreation, and wildlife and is one of the best outdoorsy thing to do in Hackney Wick.
The expansive green space spans nearly 136 hectares of calm space in its urban bubble…that’s 88 full-size football pitches!
Not to mention a biodiversity playground with woodland, scrubland, meadows, and reedbeds; and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.
Given its one of the largest areas of common land in Greater London, it’s well worth it to see the lungs of the Hackney community.
11. Hackney Wick Restaurants
Restaurants in Hackney Wick are on a different orbit, providing the most authentic experiences in East for a good meal. Here you can enjoy your East London grub against artistic backdrops or wonderful natural beauties. Here are some of the ones I love!
Barge East
Many refer to it as a hidden gem, but I’d say it’s doing anything but hiding. This restaurant will invite you aboard a century-old Dutch barge to enjoy a delicious menu changing every season (although their popular burger will always be waiting for you).
Plus plenty of green space in their improvised garden outside the boat to try their international flavours.
Tamila
This restaurant will introduce you to the rich Uyghur culture, an ethnic group native to East and Central Asia.
Here, they explore the fusion of Chinese, Middle Eastern and Central Asian traditions; making the dishes a mosaic of extravagance for your belly.
The ambience is also super chill and colourful, yet traditional. So you’ll instantly feel immersed in the Uyghur world.
Gotto Trattoria
Get a sip of the aspiring Italian life without forgetting you’re in Hackney Wick, as the beautiful (and delicious) culture blends with the iconic River Lea view.
Although the menu changes daily, you can always rely on their handmade pasta to be great. Pair it with a famous spritz and you’re set for a perfect day in East London.
12. Hackney Wick Cafes
What was once an industrial area is now a flourishing artsy district, so there’s no surprise around Hackney Wick got an immense boost of independent cafes. Here’s 3 standouts:
Saint Espresso
The cafe is driven by a simple motto: make every single detail count, from bean selection to brew. The results are Grade A coffee, regardless what you order. The minimalist interiors here are also fab, making it the perfect place to work or chill out in Hackney Wick.
Thingy Cafe
This stylish and relaxed Hackney Wick spot is great for a full breakfast (or brunch).
I personally recommend trying the popular fluffy Sourdough Pancakes, but anything on their menu will do you in. Plus, a gorgeous garden. Could it get any better?
Burnt Umber Brasserie
Burnt Umber perfectly blends the distinctive cosyness of a cafe with the sophistication of a brasserie, so I suggest coming here for a brunch or lunch in East…with a view!

13. Hackney Wick Bars & Pubs
Hackney Wick is also famous for its fantastic nightlife and ‘East London’ vibe, which translates to its bars and pubs. If you’re keen…
No90 Hackney Wick
This event-led venue known for its independent spirit is one of the best places to be in Hackney Wick. Not only can you dance to the live music while drinking incredible brews, but you can also enjoy a lovely view of the River Lee while you’re chowing down on their specials.
Lord Napier Star
This one’s a local legend in Hackney Wick, filled with bright mural-covered exteriors and a pint worth shouting about. Not only is it a pub: but an incredible creative community and venue for live music, comedy and spoken word.
P.S. – There’s an artist studio upstairs here too!
Crate Brewery
Another favourite by the local community, this was a print factory that transformed into thee place for craft beer and stone-baked pizzas in East. Everything’s brewed onsite and their taproom rotates seasonal beers. Could you ask for more?
14. Photo Op on Hackney Bridge
Our last thing to do in Hackney Wick will lead you to Hackney Bridge, a glowing commercial hub located alongside the River Lea and Olympic Park.
It’s home to East London’s finest street food vendors, bars, cafes, local independent retailers, workspaces studios and events, and is on a mission to offering a space for the community to mingle and get creative.
While here you can also appreciate its imaginative design and sustainable architecture — including repurposed shipping containers and original street art (perfect for the gram).
