The Best Things to Do in Putney, London

1. Stroll Putney Bridge

Did you know Putney Bridge was the second bridge to ever be built across the Thames?
In 1779 Putney Bridge was built as a way to better transport troops through London, but present-day it’s used daily by Putney commuters, locals and tourists alike.
Walking across this iconic London bridge will grant you stunning views of the River Thames. On warmer days, it’s a perfect place to stop and spend time just watching the boats pass by.
P.S. – Take your Putney stroll at sunset for the best views!
2. Cheer On at the Oxford vs. Cambridge Boat Race
The age old rivalry between Oxford and Cambridge makes its way to Putney every year for their annual Boat Race.
Now running for 185 years, this world famous amateur sporting event attracts over 250,000 spectators each year.
So, if you happen to find yourself in Putney during early spring, you have to witness this classic Putney event.
You can watch on and cheer as the boats paddle downstream from Putney Bridge, under both the Hammersmith and Barnes Bridges before finishing at Chiswick Bridge.

3. Visit Fulham Palace
If you’re a fan of London Palaces, a visit to Fulham Palace is a must.
Being the home for the Bishops of London for over 10 centuries, this palace has seen everything from parties with Queens and visits from Kings.
Having housed more than 133 Bishops over its years as an active living space, the palace saw a range of renovations, making it one of the most architecturally diverse buildings in English history.
Now open to the public you can spend the day wandering the property, taking it all in.
On the same stretch of land, you’ll find a 13 acre Botanic Garden, the second oldest in London.
This oasis has an abundance of flowers, plants, and trees that paint the property in color. Just recently, they opened the Natural Play Area, encouraging kids and families to reconnect with nature in South West too!
Both are free to enter, but booking online through their website is recommended.
4. Go Pub Hopping in Putney
You know what they say, the pints are calling when in Putney.
Actually, I am not sure if they say that…but stopping for a pint is never a bad thing, so here are some of the best places to grab a drink while you’re here:
The Vault – Open Fridays and Saturdays, indulge in drinks on tap, cocktails, wines & more. Also make sure to try one of their famous pies!
The Bricklayerβs Arms – A cosy family owned pub pouring up pints of ales & local craft beer
The Dukeβs Head Putney – Enjoy your favourite pint riverside at this lovely Grade II Victorian pub
Prince of Wales – Close to East Putney Station, this is the perfect place to grab a pint before heading home after a day in town
The Spotted Horse – Right on the High Street, this pub serves everything from good food, to good drinks and of course, a good time.
The Boathouse – Enjoy a pint on the outside terrace that sits right on the River Thames!
5. Have a Night (or day) Out at Tequila Mockingbird
This eclectic cocktail bar is the perfect destination if you are looking for a place to let loose, dance or drink while in Putney.
The bright interior sets the vibe right away, and with multiple bars any and every part of the place is F-U-N.
Both the basement and ground floors bars craft creative cocktails and other tasty Putney drinks.
If you’re looking for even more fun, their tunnel club room has got you covered, playing music that is sure to get you in the dancing mood.
Tequila Mockingbird is also a great spot if you’re looking for a new go to afterwork drinks spot as their outdoor terrace overlooking the river is a great place to de-stress.
6. Dine Putney Style
There’s no question that wandering around & exploring all that Putney has to offer will build up an appetite. Here’s where to grab some grub:
Home SW15 – International food being served for lunch, brunch, dinner and Sunday Specials!
Pata Negra – Transporting you to Spain, enjoy a terrific tapas meal
Thai Square – Serving authentic and tasty Thai food in a restaurant inspired by Thailand itself
Preto Putney – Brilliant Brazilian food prepared and served table-side!
Holy Cow Restaurant & Bar – Delectable Indian food made from the freshest ingredients
7. Have a Read at the Hurlingam Books
Opened in 1968, Hurlingham Books has been bringing the joy of books to Putney for 65 years!
This shop is a book lovers paradise, with shelves stocked with all the classics, first editions and new releases.
Plus, if you don’t find what you are looking for in the shop, just down the road in Fulham, they have an entire Warehouse filled with more.
Ray Cole, the owner and operator of the shop is driven by his love for the happiness books bring, and is still the person who opens the shop doors every morning!
Fun Fact – Books from Hurlingham are used as props in the film industry and have been used in some of the most famous shows & films β like Hugo, Fantastic Beats & even The Crown!
8. Take a Walk Down The Putney Sculpture Trail
If you like life sized art, the Putney Sculpture Trail is a must see. In 2008 this installation was made permanent and displays nine separate sculptures made by British artist Alan Thornhill.
They sit along the south side of the River Thames spanning 4.5 miles, free to see, and are the perfect way to spice up your Putney afternoon walk.
9. Picnic in Bishopβs Park

Bishop’s Park is the perfect place to picnic during those warmer London months. The park has it all from stunning bodies of water, to gardens plenty, and multiple areas for sport activities.
Often filled with people making the most out of what this Putney park has to offer, the vibes here are unmatched, making it a great place to waste away a sunny afternoon.
P.S. – Bishop’s Park even has an Urban Beach! Yes, you read that right. Albeit small and manmade, you’re more than welcome to picnic here and pretend you’re in Spain…at least for the day.
10. Wander Putney Heath

Part of the Wimbledon & Putney Commons, Putney Heath sits at the south end of the neighbourhood.
The heath is a beautiful and expansive green space covered with trees, shrubbery, and is a magnificent place to take a walk.
No doubt you’ll run into a few Putney dogs here too, and when do they not brighten up a day!
11. Go to Richmond (for Richmond Park) or Chelsea (for shopping on Kingβs Road)
Although these aren’t in Putney, the great neighbourhoods of Richmond and Chelsea are right nearby and offer a handful of fun things to do.
I can’t recommend Richmond Park enough. The idyllic green space is one of the most beautiful parks in London filled with deer and rich open London countryside. So well worth packing up a picnic and enjoying a day outdoors here if you’re in South West already.
On the Chelsea end β starting in Fulham (which is right near Putney), King’s Road is a shopper’s paradise.
Associated with 1960’s fashion, this street is known in South West history and makes for a great retail therapy spot nearby.
