Let’s face it—there are some hotels made for sleeping…and leaving (with the promise of exploring something far more pleasurable once you get outside).

But that certainly isn’t the case if you stay at a National Trust property.

Instead, your holiday may turn inwards—a time where instead of rushing to tick the first thing off your itinerary, you’re tempted to stay right where you are.

Welcome to Bodysgallen Hall & Spa.

In this guide I’ll be sharing everything you need to know about this divine Welsh escape.

Shall we?

A Short History of Bodysgallen Hall

Set on the west side of Pydew Mountain, Bodysgallen Hall is a Grade I listed 17th-century house, though the wider story of the site stretches back much further.

The name “Bodysgallen” is thought to mean either “house among thistles” or “the abode of Cadwallon”, after a 6th-century chieftain.

The oldest part of the house is its five-storey tower, likely dating from the late 16th century, and possibly built as a watchtower for nearby Conwy Castle.

Today, Bodysgallen Hall is one of the National Trust’s three Historic House Hotels, alongside Hartwell House and Middlethorpe Hall.

Is it Worth a Stay?

Whenever I recommend a hotel, it has to have something special about it. For Bodysgallen Hall & Spa, it’s that the hotel is a travel experience in itself.

Sitting just outside Llandudno, tucked within over 200 acres of parkland and gardens, with views towards Eryri/Snowdonia and Conwy Castle—it’s grand without feeling cold, historic without feeling untouchable, and very much the kind of place where you could quite happily lose a few days between the gardens, drawing rooms, spa and dining room.

In other words, this is not a hotel I’d book if you simply need somewhere to sleep before a busy North Wales itinerary.

But it’s much suited to a slower stay: wandering the grounds, booking into the spa, having dinner in the hotel, and using it as a beautiful base for exploring Conwy, Llandudno and Anglesey if you fancy heading out.

How to Get to Bodysgallen Hall: From London, Bodysgallen Hall & Spa is around 4-5 hours by car, depending on traffic. By train, take a direct service from London Euston to Llandudno Junction—the journey can take under 3 hours—then it’s about a 2-mile taxi to the hotel.

The Rooms

The rooms at Bodysgallen are split between rooms and suites in the main hall, and cottages dotted around the grounds.

We stayed in the Mostyn Suite (you can request a specific suite upon booking as well) one of the hotel’s four Principal Suites in the main house, alongside the Conwy, Lady Augusta and Vaughan Suites.

The Principal Suites are named either after former residents and families connected to Bodysgallen, or—in the case of the Conwy Suite—for its view towards Conwy Castle.

It’s worth choosing your room carefully depending on the kind of stay you want. The main house is best if you want to feel close to the heart of the hotel, while the cottages are a lovely option if you’d prefer something a little more private and tucked away.

The Grounds

The most impressive part of Bodysgallen is its grounds.

Here you’ll find over 200 acres to explore, with formal gardens, wooded parkland, a walled rose garden, follies and a rare 17th-century parterre of box hedges filled with herbs.

On a clear day, the views towards the mountains and Conwy Castle make the setting feel especially Welsh and lovely.

It’s exactly the kind of place that suits an unhurried stay. Especially worth exploring after a hearty breakfast or before dinner with a view.

Speaking of…

Food & Drink

The hotel’s Dining Room has 2 AA Rosettes and serves seasonal food in a setting that feels very much in line with the rest of the property: elegant, traditional and unfussy.

Dinner here feels like part of the experience rather than just a practical necessity, so I’d plan to eat in at least once during your stay.

Afternoon tea is also very well suited to Bodysgallen. Served in the main hall, drawing room, library or on the terrace when the weather allows.

And we can’t forget breakfast.

The Spa

And lastly, there’s the spa.

Bodysgallen Spa sits a short walk from the main hall and is very much worth making time for. We did pretty much everything on offer—the indoor pool, spa bath, sauna, steam room, relaxation areas and a GAIA treatment.

I’d recommend carving out a good chunk of time for the spa rather than treating it as a quick extra. Have a slow swim, book a treatment if you can, and then give yourself permission to do very little afterwards.

Short Trips from Bodysgallen Hall

Conwy Castle

If you only do one outing from Bodysgallen, make it Conwy Castle.

The castle is one of the most impressive medieval fortresses in Wales, built by Edward I between 1283 and 1287, with its town walls, towers and views over the harbour and mountains.

Just a few minutes’ drive from the hotel.

Boat Ride from Conwy to Puffin Island

For something a little different, I’d also recommend a boat trip from Conwy towards Puffin Island.

This is the one we took, which leaves from Conwy Harbour (right near Cowny Castle).

It’s a one-hour wildlife boat trip with the chance to see seals, seabirds and, if you’re lucky, dolphins or porpoises too.

P.S. Bring warm layers, even if the weather looks nice. It can feel much cooler once you’re out on the water.

Llanfairpwllgwyngyll

Another fun stop from Bodysgallen is Llanfairpwllgwyngyll on Anglesey—best known by its much longer name:

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

It’s famous for having the longest place name in Europe, and one of the longest in the world, so yes, the main thing to do here is take a photo with the station sign.

I wouldn’t necessarily make this your entire day out, but it’s a fun little Welsh stop if you’re heading towards Anglesey anyway, around a 30-minute drive from the hotel.

The Great Olme

Another easy outing from Bodysgallen is The Great Orme, around 10–15 minutes by car from the hotel.

It’s one of the best places near Llandudno for delicious coastal views—with walking routes, dramatic cliffs, wildlife, and the option to take the Great Orme Tramway or cable car if you’d rather make it more of a classic seaside day out.

I’d especially recommend it if you want something scenic and close by that doesn’t take over the whole day—perfect before returning to the hotel for the spa, dinner or a slower evening in.

Final Thoughts on Bodysgallen Hall

If you’re looking for a historic hotel in North Wales where the property itself is a huge part of the reason to go, Bodysgallen Hall & Spa is a very lovely one to have on your list.

Between the National Trust history, beautiful grounds, elegant public rooms, 2 AA Rosette dining, afternoon tea and a spa worth setting aside time for, it’s a gorgeous shout for a romantic Welsh escape, a special occasion stay, or a slower North Wales break.

I hope this guide has inspired your next UK hotel stay.
