Why Do You Need a Niche As A Content Creator?

Why Do You Need a Niche As A Content Creator?

💡 What is a niche? A niche is a specific topic or subject your content focuses on.

Before you niche down as a content creator it’s important to understand why you need a niche as a content creator in the first place.

In today’s social media world – people are overwhelmed.

With so much content going around, so many new content creators entering the scene and so many new platforms popping up…it’s too much. So, what’s the solution?

Follow people for a specific reason.

This helps users be intentional about their social media use by following people that match their specific interests and hobbies rather than following someone that posts ‘just whatever’.

It’s the new norm of internet behaviour and it’s not truly not going anywhere. Having a niche is how you adapt to the new internet!

On the practical from the content creator side, having a niche enables you to build community faster, monetize your brand regardless of brand deals, and have a clear plan for your content strategy and brand.

In short, if you’re becoming a content creator this year, having a niche is no longer a suggested optional, but your key superpower to having success online as a creator.

Write Down 10 of Your Interests

Write Down 10 of Your Interests

The first step to niching down is deciding on topics you would *actually* want to talk about long-term.

I find the best place to start with this is writing down 10 of your interests (and don’t think too much about it!).

What interests you? What hobbies do you have? What do you like to watch online?

Creating content from things that interest you greatly increases your chances of sticking with the niche you choose.

What Does the Content Creation Process Look Like For Your Chosen Niche?

What Does the Content Creation Process Look Like For Your Chosen Niche?

Now that you have some niche options it’s important to understand what the content creation process for that niche actually looks like…and if you want to do it.

For example, if you decide ‘I want to make videos in the solo travel niche’ but you only take solo trips once a year – the likelihood of you having enough content to be a consistent content creator is incredibly slim.

On the other hand, if you amended your niche to ‘local solo trips’ you realistically could make more content.

Whether it’s travel, cooking, books, business, fashion or anything inbetween — spend some time on the internet looking at how the content creation process looks and if this is something you’d realistically want to do yourself when it comes to the travel, filming and editing involved in that particular content niche.

The 100 Content Idea Test

The 100 Content Idea Test

We’re getting closer!

You know what content interests you, you know what the content creation process looks like, now it’s time to do the Content Idea Test.

Now feel free to amend the 100 to 50, but the 100 Content Idea Test is guaranteed to help you niche down as a content creator.

From your idea list of niches see you if you can write down 100 video ideas for that niche.

While you’re jotting them down ask yourself:

💭Do these topic ideas excite me?

💭Could I see myself creating these videos on a weekly basis?

💭 Are these ideas flowing to me with ease?

💭 Are there unique takes I can imagine myself contributing to these videos/ideas?

💭 Does the thought of creating these 100 videos over a year make me jump with joy or panic?

Personally for me, writing out 100 ideas for my London niche came with ease, it was fun, energizing, and made me excited to create. That’s the feeling you’re looking for!

Let Go of the Fear of Being Boxed In

Let Go of the Fear of Being Boxed In

In all of this remember that knowing how to niche down as a creator does not mean you’re bound to your niche like glue, in other words, boxed in.

Having a niche for your content allows an ease and flow that just can’t be found in being a generalist.

For example, if you love fashion you may think that being bound into the niche would leave you perpetually stuck in ‘get ready with me’ videos.

But in reality the videos you’d be making as a byproduct of your niche could include travel (travel outfits and styling), personal development (example video: things to wear to feel more confident) and so much more.

Through my niche I’m able to talk about London neighbourhoods, travel tips, moving abroad advice, UK & Europe travel and so much more.

In other words, you make your niche and you make your ‘box’ too!

Let the Niche Find You – (trial and error)

Let the Niche Find You - (trial and error)

As a content creator the pressure to find a niche is strong from the very start, but in all my years of building a niche community online and teaching others how to do the same I’ve found more often than not your niche will find you through experimentation.

Now this advice is not for people that don’t create content consistently, because you’ll simply never have enough data points to know what works and what doesn’t if you don’t.

But if you are someone who is trying out different niches and content styles consistently and seeing what lands, then over time I promise your niche will find you.

Use trial and error, pay attention to the content you enjoy creating, what resonates with your audience and what niche excites YOU enough to be a content creator.
