When I first became a travel blogger, I had so many questions.

How do I start a travel blog? How do I choose my niche? And of course, what travel blogging equipment do I need to make it in the crazy world of blogging and content creation.

Without further ado, here’s my quick blogging equipment list to make your travel content creator journey as smooth as possible when it comes to gear.

P.S. – The following equipment applies to both travel bloggers and travel influencers, but you can read the difference between a blogger and an influencer here!

5 Travel Blogging Equipment & Gear: Travel Blogging Gear List

My Camera: Canon 5D Mark VI

My first piece of travel blogging equipment (and my baby) is my Canon 5D Mark VI.

This camera has been with me throughout my travel content creation journey and I can truly say it’s made a huge difference in becoming a full-time travel blogger.

Keep in mind, this camera is not cheap. But it is 1000% worth saving for and investing in for serious travel bloggers.

The Canon 5D Mark IV comes with a full-frame sensor, 4k video, a built-in GPS, and WiFi making it one of the best Canon cameras for travel content creation. Not to mention it’s weather-proof and works great in low light.

I tend to use it with the 16-35mm, but keep in mind this a particular taste. For everyday photos, I would opt for the 24-70mm lens for a wider range. Unlike many cameras, because of the quality, even a zoom lens produces stunning photos.

P.S. – Make sure to get an external harddrive to store all your camera footage!

My iPhone: iPhone 13 Pro Max

All my reels on Instagram are shot with my iPhone!

Next up is my iPhone 13 Pro Max.

If you didn’t know already, travel blogging nowadays includes a lot more than publishing blog posts.

In the age of social media, making Tik Toks and Reels is a big part of the picture too — which means you’ll want to have a great phone camera.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, ‘Candace, why not the iPhone 14? The latest the better right?’.

Taking a lesson from a fellow travel blogger friend of mine, I learned that there’s really not much camera difference between two consecutive models of iPhones, however if you skip a model then the changes are massive.

For this reason I’ll be waiting to get the iPhone 15 when it drops, rather than getting the 14 which has more or less the same features as the 13.

Regardless, having a newer model of either the iPhone or Android will make a huge difference in the quality of your short-form videos online, so definitely invest in it. And a power bank so your phone never dies while you’re shooting.

P.S. – If you shoot any of your travel content at home make sure you have a ring light! And if you do voiceovers for any of your social media content make sure to get a phone mic too.

Product Recap:

Gimbal:

Every wonder how travel bloggers get those crisp clean shots of destinations? It all lies in the gimbal (or gimbal type movement at least).

A gimbal’s job is to make your camera as steady as possible. Giving you beautiful shots and smooth clips in the process.

This is the gimbal I use for my iPhone, but bear in mind there is a bit of a learning curve.

If you’re not quite ready to add it to your blogging accessories list, then this phone stabaliser works great too, with less tech to figure out (and a lower price point). Just make sure you get the right sized one for your phone!

Tripods: Camera + Phone

About to shoot some bits with my tripod!

Tripods are like a secret weapon for travel bloggers, especially if you’re a solo travel blogger.

Using a tripod allows you to take pictures and videos of yourself without needing a plus one, great if you want to get some solo shots before joining your group or just want to get your content exactly the way you want it.

Because DSLR cameras and phones are vastly different sizes, you’ll want to get a different tripod for each.

Here’s the tripod I use for my DSLR Camera and the tripod I use for my phone.

Photo & Video Editing: Lightroom

Although it’s not techinically ‘travel blogging equipment’, Lightroom is a godsend for editing all your content, and is a must have if you’re a travel content creator looking to make it.

The power of Lightroom!

Lightroom Mobile is completely free and a great blogging and content creation tool to get your feet wet with editing your photos and video content.

When you’re ready to invest a bit more, I suggest getting Lightroom CC to get the app on your desktop and edit content in bulk and more seamlessly.

Bonus: Keysearch

Writing all my blog posts with Keysearch!

If you’re a travel blogger or plan to be, knowing about SEO will be a huge part of your success.

Keysearch is my go-to for writing all my blog posts on Candace Abroad, and a must-add to your travel blogger gear list.

Keyword research is how you find what people are searching for on Google, so you can create content that answers their questions.

If you don’t use keywords in your blog posts, no one will find you via Google and you’ll be losing hundreds, potentially thousands of new readers each month that could be enjoying your travel content.

Given 70% of my traffic is from SEO, I really couldn’t be a travel blogger without it!
