Is March a Good Time to Visit London?

london march good time to visit

March is just when the city starts to cast off its winter coat and embrace the bright, cheery colours of spring. But just like any season, it comes with both its perks and quirks.

March lets you enjoy London just as it’s waking from its winter slumber. The queues are shorter, the streets are a bit quieter, and the prices can be gentler on your wallet.

Plus, with the weather starting to warm up a bit, it’s a lovely time for strolls along the Thames, or a visit to Kew Gardens to see the first blooms of spring.

You might even be lucky to see the cherry blossoms put on quite the show towards the end of the month! And talking about shows, the city’s vibrant theatre scene starts to gear up in a BIG way.

But, there are a bit of downsides.

March weather in London can be as changeable as the Queen’s Guard—sunny one moment, drizzling the next. So don’t be surprised to find yourself basking in gentle sunshine, then ducking into a café to avoid a sudden shower. Better play it safe and keep that brolly close at hand (that’s code for umbrella…).

And while the cold is on its way out, you can still have quite a few chilly days. So, you’ll need to pack a bit of everything—sunnies and scarf, coat and cap. A true London experience, if you ask me!

In short, London in March is like a box of chocolates—you never know what you’re gonna get!

London Weather in March

As winter gradually recedes, March reveals a warmer side of London, with temperatures ranging from the low 5°C (41°F) in the early bit of the month to about 12°C (54°F) as spring begins to steal the show.

However, keep in mind that London’s weather can be quite temperamental, so be prepared for some occasional cold snaps.

Evenings and early mornings remain chilly, so a cosy sweater or jacket is always a smart addition to your daily outfit.

Rain continues to make an appearance in March, so don’t forget that trusty umbrella. It typically falls over about 13.1 days, with average monthly rainfall around 34.2mm.

As for snow, chances are relatively slim, but there’s always a possibility! Especially at the beginning of the month. Two years ago London surprised us with a couple of hours mid March, so who knows?

You’d be happy to know that the daylight hours begin to stretch out quite generously, serving up a hearty dose of brightness spanning up to 12 glorious hours per day towards the end of March.

And speaking of the month’s end, strolling past the cherry blossoms in full bloom in London’s parks can be an incredible treat! Their fluttering petals shimmering in the spring sun create a picturesque spectacle, providing delightful weather to wade into London’s springtime magic.

What to Pack for London in March

Cherry blossoms in every corner, postcard-pastel houses, and the first sight of al-fresco dining. If you’re coming to London in March, you should be prepared for a delightful blend of winter and spring.

Here are a few items you can’t miss in your packing.

Winter Coat / Water Resistant Jacket

You don’t have to bring both, but hear me out. If you come in the beginning of the month, winter’s pretty much still reigning. However, the coat doesn’t have to be sturdy or huge; just make sure it’s cosy and cold for the early mornings and evenings.

Now, for the second half of the month, a water resistant jacket is the way to go. Make sure it’s not extra light, though, as this one will have the double function of keeping you warm and protected during the surprising weather spurts.

Light Blouses

Wandering London in March is a magical experience, as you’ll constantly spot incredible photogenic opportunities. You can make the most out of them with beautiful, colourful blouses to match the amazing floral backgrounds you’ll find yourself in. Best part is they’re light for the suitcase!

Cardigans

Now if you were just thinking “how the heck am I going to stay warm with light blouses?”, let me give you the answer. Cardigans! They’re your ally for chilly afternoons, an accidental coffee stain and a stylish change of outfit.

It’s also a warm cover-up for when you’re popping into London museums, coffee shops and well, everything inbetween.

Jeans

The time to start wearing the usually cold jeans in London has arrived! They are perfect for easy, fast planning outfits, as they allow you to switch out your spring tops with ease. Plus, you’ll save space in your luggage, as one pair can do wonders.

Ankle Boots

Warm, practical and extremely cool. Who invented these and where can I thank them? Complement your spring outfits with these and start serving all across London! Pair with warm fluffy socks and you’re set for any day, any time.

Other Items

And now, off to the savvy accessories to ensure a good, efficient exploration of London.

  • A small backpack or a medium tote. As spring arrives, why not have fun with the colours? For this one, the only consideration I’d have is to pick waterproof materials, and a good size to have some extra space for any souvenirs or snacks.
  • A compact umbrella. Spring is almost synonym with rain, so you want to make sure you’re set with a small one in your bag at all times.
  • Lip balm and hand cream. It gets dry during winter! So for the earlier part of the month, your lips and hands will need extra attention and care.
  • Portable charger. Google Maps, Citymapper, and the gram will be your biggest tools while exploring London, so you want to stay connected. Here’s the one I use.
  • Power adapter. Don’t forget that the UK operates under different outlets. I suggest getting a Universal Adapter if you’re travelling in Europe too on your trip.

What to Wear for London in March

Candace wearing in march

Yes, this is the month where all the London myths become your everyday experience. See, the winter is leaving and the spring is arriving, so you’ll have a little bit of everything!

However, that means you’ll have extra opportunity to be fashionable and different in every pic. Beanie with sunglasses? Check. Dress with tights? Of course. Chunky boots? Every day!

So start with a base, maybe a nice cotton tee or blouse, then pop a mid-layer on top—a smart jumper or comfy sweatshirt—and finish with your coat. That way, you can peel off or slap on layers as the British weather dictates.

As for your pins, jeans or other medium-weight trousers are a safe bet. You’ll want to bring some sturdy, waterproof shoes too, just in case you encounter the odd, cheeky rain shower London is known for.

Now, don’t forget your hat, scarves, and gloves. Even though spring is just around the corner, the mornings and evenings can still be a bit crisp. Top off your outfit with a snazzy umbrella — perfect for twirling down the city streets on drizzly afternoons.

And there you have it! You’re all set to blend in like a local and navigate the changeable streets of our lovely capital.
