Get ready for London to be at its springtastic best! From budding blossoms in the parks and longer, sun-filled days, to compelling exhibitions and vibrant food festivals, London in April is a treat for the senses.

With the city armpits-deep in spring vibes, it’s the ideal time for a riverside amble or an alfresco pint in one of those delightful beer gardens.

But it may also be like a buttered-up crumpet – or in other words, slippery!

One minute you’re basking in the glorious spring sun, and the next you’re ducking for cover from a sudden shower. Nothing that good preparation can’t solve, though.

Is April a Good Time to Visit London?

If I may, April is one of the best months to visit London in the whole year! I mean, every month has something on its own, but this one offers beautiful days, fun activities and a bit of peace before the peek madness.

Rolling right in with the absolute positives, the weather in April is fairly mild. You’ll escape the bite of winter and beat the summer heat that June and July bring. And the longer daylight hours deserve bonus points for giving you more time to soak it all in!

It’s also the season when London quite literally blossoms into life – think abundant tulips in St. James Park, vibrant camellias in Chiswick House & Gardens, and let’s not forget the charming magnolias around Notting Hill!

But nothing is perfect, and unfortunately London falls in that list. And yes, it’s also about the weather (oh, London).

The famous April showers are as unpredictable as a moody cat, so it’s really, really important to always keep an umbrella or waterproof gear close. Trust me, London’s rain can sneak up on you faster than a black cab in the slow lane.

Also, bear in mind it can still get a bit nippy, particularly in the evenings and early mornings. So, a light coat or some warmer layers would be a wise addition to your travelling wardrobe.

Lastly, with Easter often falling in April, some attractions can get busier with local families and school holiday trippers. Especially those kid-friendly, like the interesting free museums and Zoo.

All said though, the odd shower or two can’t dampen the spirits of a city teeming with intrepid enthusiasm and heritage charm.

You’d be happy to know that London in April is not too hot, not too cold – with just the right mix of mild days and brisk nights.

But if there’s one thing typical of it, it’s the word ‘unpredictable’. Temperatures can range from a brisk 8°C (46°F) in the early mornings and evenings to a mildly warm 15°C (60°F) in the afternoon (yes, that’s considerably warm in London).

So while there’s definitely a whisper of summer in the air, don’t toss aside your warmer layers just yet! Keep your light coats at hand, as you may still need them when the sun dips below London’s iconic skyline.

Important note: April showers are quite the institution in London. In fact, it has a reputation as one of the wettest months of the year, with rains expected on an average of half the days in the month.

But don’t panic! The rain generally comes in short, sharp bursts rather than day-long drizzles – just enough to freshen up the city’s parks and gardens.

Speaking of green spaces, April is when cherry blossom season is in full swing, imparting a pinkish hue to areas like Greenwich Park, Kensington Gardens, and Kew Gardens, offering sublime views and Instagram-worthy snaps.

Finally, in terms of daylight, April is quite generous. With sunrise before 6 am and sunset well after 8 pm on most days, you’ll have plenty of daylight hours to enjoy the springtime bloom and explore London in all its glory!

What to Pack for London in April

Winter is finally over! And with the weather significantly comfortable in April, your packing list is now light, fun, and practical. Here are some things you can’t miss.

Water Resistant Jacket

This. Is. MANDATORY. April showers will be super effective in washing all your sorrows and bad energy away…which would be perfect if you weren’t planning on exploring the city non-stop! A water resistant jacket is the way to go to keep you going regardless of what’s happening up in the sky.

Light Blouses

With the gorgeous blossoms across London, you’ll constantly stop to capture incredible snaps for the gram. So make the most out of them with beautiful, colourful blouses to match the amazing floral backgrounds you’ll find yourself in. Best part is they’re light for the suitcase!

Cardigans

Like I said before, April weather can still be a bit cold, especially in the evenings. A cardigan can become your best friend to keep you warm without carrying too much, plus be really stylish.

Jeans

Leggings are great, but you can’t deny jeans elevate an outfit to a new level. They’re perfect for easy, fast planning outfits, as they allow you to switch out your spring tops with ease. One pair can do wonders, so you can save space in your luggage for other fun bits, like skits and…

And now, off to the savvy accessories to ensure a good, efficient exploration of London.

A small backpack or a medium tote. As spring hits London, why not have fun with the colours? I’d highly recommend waterproof materials and a good size to have some extra space for any souvenirs or snacks.
A compact umbrella. Those April showers again. But believe me, you’ll see what I’m talking about. Doesn’t mean you have to feel it too!
Sunglasses. It’s time to see some London under the sun! So why not do it through a cool pair of sunnies? They’ll make you look fabulous, too!
Sunscreen. It’s not only about looking cool under the sun, but being safe. So don’t forget to bring a handy one to carry with you!
Portable charger. Google Maps, Citymapper, and the gram will be your biggest tools while exploring London, so you want to stay connected. Here’s the one I use.
Power adapter. Don’t forget that the UK operates under different outlets. I suggest getting a Universal Adapter if you’re travelling in Europe too on your trip.

What to Wear for London in April

Given London’s whimsical April weather, dressing in layers is your safest bet (what else is new in London, am I right?).

Start with a lightweight top of your preferred colour (call me extra, but I love thinking about the places I’m visiting and their palette to pick something that contrasts).

If you can opt for long sleeves to shield against an April gust that might say ‘hello’ when you least expect it, that’ll be perfect.

You’ll surely need a good lightweight jacket – think leather, denim, or a classic trench that never goes amiss on the stylish streets of London. If it can be waterproof, better. If not, don’t forget your brolly!

Next, opt for adaptable bottoms like jeans or casual trousers that pair well with a variety of tops. Add to it a pair of well-soled trainers or comfortable walking shoes because, trust me, your feet will thank you after a long day trotting around the city’s attractions.

I know skirts are highly desired in spring, but London might not be warm enough for you to use them. Unless you pair with some sexy tights! Just check the weather before you go out, as it can be the difference between rushing to the hotel or staying out until the last pub closes.

Lastly, accessories. A stylish hat can provide that extra warmth during breezy mornings or evening walks. Not to mention, they surely add a little sprinkle of chicness. Plus, the unmissable sunnies are perfect for when London surprise you with our bright friend.

You’ll also find services at gorgeous churches and cathedrals, including Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Southwark Cathedral and St Martin-in-the-Fields.

Run or Cheer at the London Marathon

With its first event taking place in 1981, it’s now one of the most popular marathons in the world. The route is magnificent, taking many of the best landmarks, including Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge and Canary Wharf.
