Unlike big cities, Whitstable isn’t about big attractions or rushing from place to place.

The town is small, charming, and best enjoyed slowly.

Here you can stroll down its narrow streets, wander the beach, tuck into seafood by the harbour — and simply soak up the coastal vibes.

The star of the show is, of course, Whitstable’s oysters. The town has been harvesting them since Roman times, and the tradition continues today with oyster shacks, seafood stalls, and even an annual Whitstable Oyster Festival each September.

But beyond the oysters, there’s a creative streak to Whitstable too — think indie shops, art galleries, and colourful huts along the shore that also make it one of the most photogenic day trips you can take from London.

How to Get to Whitstable From London

🚆 By Train

The quickest way to reach Whitstable from London is by train from London Victoria Station.

The ride takes about 1 hour 25 minutes with no changes, and trains run fairly often throughout the day.

Return fares usually land between £25–£40, and you can save with a Railcard if you’ve got one.

Once you arrive at Whitstable Station, it’s about a 10-minute walk to the high street to start your day!

🚗 By Car

If you prefer driving, the journey from London to Whitstable takes around 1 hour 45 minutes, depending on traffic. Parking is straightforward: the Gorrell Tank Car Park near the harbour is the main option, but there are also smaller lots and roadside spaces around town.

🛍 Browse Whitstable High Street

Start your day with a wander down Whistable’s High Street.

It’s lined with bookshops, boutiques, cafés, and even a small museum (the Whitstable Community Museum) where you can dip into the stories of the town’s history.

It’s a cosy stretch and easy to lose track of time popping in and out of shops.

Whilst on the high street don’t forget to take a picture in front of the pink and iconic Wheeler’s Oyster Bay! (8 High St, Whitstable CT5 1BQ)

🦪 Eat Oysters at the Harbour

You can’t come to Whitstable without trying its famous oysters. Head to the harbour, where fishing boats unload their daily catch and seafood stalls serve oysters fresh from the sea.

There are lots of spots to choose from, many of which you’ll find just by walking down the harbour.

But I really enjoyed The Harbour Garden — casual, right by the water, and perfect for a plate of oysters with a glass of wine.

🎨 Tankerton Slopes & Beach Huts

After lunch, take a walk along the seafront to see Whitstable’s Tankerton Beach Huts.

Brightly painted and perched on the slopes above the beach, they’re an iconic sight and one of the town’s best photo spots.

The walk along the promenade is lovely too, with wide coastal views and plenty of benches if you fancy a sit-down.

🏰 Visit Whitstable Castle & Gardens

End your day at Whitstable Castle, about a 10-minute walk from the harbour.

Once a grand private home, the castle is now open to the public with manicured gardens and a tea room.

It’s a quiet place to round off your visit, and their cream tea is well worth ordering before you head back to London.

Pro tip: Entry is free, but you’ll need a guide to see inside the castle rooms. Tours depend on volunteer availability, so timing can be hit or miss — we got lucky on our visit!

Although Whitstable makes a perfect day trip, staying overnight gives you more time to enjoy the town after the day-trippers leave.

Hotel Continental is a lovely choice right on the seafront, while Marine Hotel offers boutique-style rooms and sea views.
