Christmas is one of the times I’d care even more than usual about where your London hotel is.
After 10 years of Christmas seasons in London, I know just how quickly a festive evening can become 5+ miles of walking, a packed itinerary and far too little time to spend ages on the Tube getting to Central London.
With that said, here’s my pick of the best hotels in London to actually consider for your Christmas trip:
The Welbeck for a central-but-calmer Christmas, The Resident Covent Garden if you want the West End almost outside your door, Hotel Café Royal for the full five-star Christmas splurge, The Z Hotel Soho if you’d rather spend more of the budget outside the room, and The Hoxton, Southwark for the Thames and South Bank side of Christmas.

1. The Welbeck: My Best Overall Christmas Hotel in London
Best for: a first London Christmas, shopping and lights, couples, families and anyone who wants to be central without sleeping in the full West End rush.
The Welbeck is my top pick for a Christmas in London stay, and I have quite a few (very biased) reasons why.
For one, you’re in Marylebone, meaning you can easily walk out for coffee, spend the afternoon around the neighbourhood, hit Selfridges and Oxford Street, then carry on to Regent Street once the lights come on.
And when you’ve had enough of the West End crowds, simply retreat back towards Marylebone rather than sleep in the thick of them.
I’d book The Welbeck if you want the London Christmas outside your door but a calmer hotel to come back to.
P.S. – The hotel was also once tied to London’s medical world and is filled with history bits throughout.
2. The Resident Covent Garden: Best for a First Christmas in London
Best for: first-time visitors, West End theatre, Christmas lights, couples and anyone who wants to walk out of the hotel and immediately feel like they’re in Christmas London.
If you’ve pictured your trip as giant baubles, a huge Christmas tree, dinner in the West End and very little commuting, The Resident Covent Garden is the one I’d look at.
The hotel sits in a historic Edwardian building overlooking the Strand, with just 57 rooms and suites. More importantly for December, Covent Garden is right there.
For 2026, Covent Garden’s Christmas season begins on 12 November with more than 300,000 lights, those enormous gold bells and baubles around the Market Building and the British-grown tree on the West Piazza.
In other words, you can walk out to Covent Garden, over to Somerset House skating, into the West End for theatre and back through the lights without really thinking about transport. If you’re bringing little ones, pair it with my Christmas in London with kids guide.
I’d book The Resident Covent Garden if your dream is to step outside at 9pm and still be in the middle of Christmas in London.
3. Hotel Café Royal: Best Luxury Hotel for Christmas Day in London
Best for: a proper five-star Christmas, Christmas Eve or Christmas Day in London.
If I were staying in the city over Christmas Day and wanted the hotel to be part of my bucket list trip to London, this is the one I’d look at.
Hotel Café Royal sits directly on Regent Street, and Café Royal has been part of London life since 1865. Oscar Wilde dined here, the future Edward VIII and George VI were among its guests, and Winston Churchill was a guest too. The historic Café Royal Grill still has its gilded Louis XVI interiors.
And of course, you can step right outside and be underneath the Regent Street angels, with Soho and Mayfair on either side.
The hotel has 159 rooms and suites, plus its Akasha Spa and its 18-metre lap pool. There’s also a 2026 festive programme and a “Magic of Christmas” stay for either 24–26 or 25–27 December 2026, with breakfast, festive welcome treats, Christmas Day lunch or dinner with live music, Christmas Eve storytelling, a Santa visit, stockings and access to Akasha Spa. Oh, and there’s also an optional horse-drawn carriage ride from Air Street to Trafalgar Square…
I’d book Hotel Café Royal if you’re keen on a lovely Christmas hotel splurge.

4. The Z Hotel Soho: Best Budget-ish Hotel for a Central London Christmas
Best for: solo travellers, short stays, West End shows, nightlife and anyone who would rather spend the Christmas budget on London.
December hotel prices in Central London can get rather rude, so if you’re looking for pure location without frills, choose The Z Hotel Soho.
The hotel sits at 17 Moor Street in Soho, with the West End, Carnaby and Covent Garden all close enough that you can spend most evenings walking. Very nice for nights that will most likely end with theatre, Christmas lights or ‘one more drink’ in a festive pub.
The catch is square footage. Z Single rooms are around 8–9m² and the cheapest “Inside Double” has no window at all.
For a week-long family Christmas with suitcases and shopping bags, I’d personally want more space. But for a solo trip or two nights where you’re out from breakfast until bedtime, it’s a good cheap-and-cheerful option.
I’d book The Z Hotel Soho if location and budget matter most for your Christmas trip.
5. The Hoxton, Southwark: Best for South Bank Christmas Markets & the Thames
Best for: South Bank winter markets, river walks, couples and repeat visitors who don’t need every evening to begin in the West End.
If the thought of spending every December night around Oxford Street makes you feel tired already, I’d cross the river.
The Hoxton, Southwark is on Blackfriars Road, a few minutes from the Thames and close enough to make South Bank part of your everyday route rather than a separate sightseeing day in the city.
Come November, that route gets even better. The Southbank Centre’s winter season brings markets, shows and seasonal food and drink to the river, and you can keep walking towards London Bridge when you’re not ready to go back yet.
The hotel itself has 192 rooms with concrete ceilings, parquet floors and marble details—nodding to the tanneries and factories that once shaped this part of South London.
You’ve also got Albie downstairs for all-day food and late drinks, and Seabird up on the roof with city views and seafood.
Fair warning that you will give up the ability to tumble straight out onto Regent Street or Covent Garden. But if you’ve already done that version of London—or you’d rather end the evening walking beside the Thames—I think that’s exactly the appeal.
Overall, I’d book The Hoxton, Southwark for a Christmas trip that feels a little less West End and a little more river-and-neighbourhood London.

When I’d Book a Christmas Hotel in London
Does it need to be said? Early!
London at Christmas is one of the busiest times of year, and accommodation prices can absolutely spike before you know it. If you’re travelling over Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or New Year’s Eve, I’d be particularly keen to lock the hotel in early.
The same goes for Friday and Saturday nights in December if you’re set on a particular property.
Final Thoughts on the Best Christmas Hotels in London
Choosing the best hotel for your Christmas in London trip can be quite the task, but it’s far less daunting once you know what you’re looking for.
If it were my first festive trip, I’d choose The Welbeck for a quieter and very walkable Central London Christmas.
If I wanted to be right in the middle of it, I’d choose The Resident Covent Garden.
If I were actually staying over Christmas Day and wanted a chic and iconic hotel in the city, I’d gladly pay up for Hotel Café Royal.
And if I’d rather keep more money for theatre, afternoon tea and all the things I’ll inevitably buy “because it’s Christmas,” I’d take the smaller room at The Z Hotel Soho.
And of course, for a second-time trip and Christmas walks along the Thames, give me The Hoxton, Southwark any day.

I wouldn’t choose a hotel solely around Winter Wonderland, but Marylebone is a very convenient compromise. The Welbeck keeps you close to Hyde Park while still making Regent Street and Oxford Street easy to reach by foot.

I’d choose The Hoxton, Southwark. You’re a short walk from the Thames and well placed for the Southbank Centre winter season, while still having easy access to the West End when you want it.
