The Best Time to Visit Bruges: When I’d Go Again

Looking for the best time to visit Bruges? Here’s when I’d go again after visiting in spring and autumn, including what each season is actually good for, when Bruges is busiest, what to do by month and when I’d plan a first trip vs. a return trip.

Bruges is one of those cities where the season you visit really does change the trip.

Candace Abroad in Bruges

My May trip to Bruges!

The canals, cobbled streets, stepped-gable buildings, chocolate shops, beer cafés and Markt views are all there year-round.

But Bruges in spring is not the same as Bruges in autumn.

And Bruges at Christmas? That’s another trip entirely (and one still on my list!)

Bruges in December

I’ve visited Bruges twice now—once as a day trip from Brussels when I was 19, and again more recently for an overnight stay in the city centre in spring.

Between those trips, I’ve visited in spring and autumn, which I genuinely think are two of the best times to see the city.

However Christmas in Bruges is firmly on my list for a third visit, because if any city is built for hot chocolate and market stalls, it’s Bruges.

So, when’s the best time to visit Bruges?

For most people, I’d say April, May, September or October.

For a festive trip, I’d choose late November or December.

And if summer is the only time you can go? Still go. Just keep in mind you’ll have much larger crowds. Here’s how I’d choose your dates.

Shall we?

P.S. – If you’re still planning the rest of your trip, read my guides to the best things to do in Bruges, one day in Bruges, my 2 days in Bruges itinerary, where to stay in Bruges and where to eat in Bruges next.

Quick Answer: Best Time to Visit Bruges

Bruges horses in street

The best time to visit Bruges (outside of Bruges at Christmas) is April, May, September or October.

Those months will give you the best balance (in my opinion) of walkable weather, fewer crowds than peak summer, canal cruise potential, cosy food stops and enough atmosphere without the city feeling completely overrun with tourists.

If it’s your first time in Bruges, I’d choose spring or early autumn.

If you’ve already been once and want a reason to go back, I’d choose late November or December for Bruges at Christmas.

And if your only time off is summer, do it! Just make sure to spend at least two days in Bruges so you can have some early mornings and evenings in Bruges too vs. just a rushed day trip.

Book Your Bruges Trip

Where I stayed: I stayed at Hotel Acacia Bruges, just a few minutes’ walk from Markt Square and Bruges’ historic centre. You can also compare more hotels in Bruges here.

Getting to Bruges: Compare train times and prices from Brussels to Bruges, London to Bruges, Paris to Bruges or Amsterdam to Bruges.

The tour I’d book for a first trip: I loved this small-group walking tour and canal cruise because it combines two of the best ways to see Bruges—walking (and gawking) through the historic centre and seeing the city from the canals.

For food lovers: This private Bruges food tour with 10 tastings is a more in-depth and delicious way to try Belgian food and drinks, all while exploring the city with a local guide.

Stay connected: Make sure to set up your Europe eSIM before your trip. It takes less than five minutes, and you’ll have mobile data ready when you arrive.

For extra peace of mind: Take a look at SafetyWing’s travel medical insurance before your trip—it’s the one I personally use and recommend!

My Honest Verdict After Visiting Bruges in Spring and Autumn

If I were planning someone’s first trip to Bruges, I’d send them in spring.

Spring Bruges gives you the version most people are hoping for: canals, cobbles, chocolate shops, decent walking weather, café stops, flowers, boat rides and enough people around that the city feels alive without being unbearable.

It’s never empty (because Bruges is…Bruges), but it’s not so crowded that you spend the whole day trying to crop people out of every photo.

Autumn is the season I’d choose if you want Bruges to feel a little slower and more grown-up. Think beer bars, museums, checking out the Bruges restaurant and café scene, doing the Windmill Walk and coming back to your hotel for a chilled one before going out again.

That’s also why I think Bruges is a city you can visit more than once.

Your first trip can be filled with bits like Markt, the Belfry, Burg Square, Rozenhoedkaai, Bonifacius Bridge, book a walking tour with chocolate tasting and a canal cruise or a brewery tour.

The second trip can be more local-led with cafés, windmills, beer, small museums, staying overnight or getting up to more unique things to do in Bruges.

For a Christmas trip, you can plan around Bruges’ Winter Glow, which runs from 20 November to 14 February this year. I’d also make time for hot chocolate at The Old Chocolate House and the central Christmas markets. Christmas in Bruges is still firmly on my list for a third trip.

Spring in Bruges: March, April and May

Best for: first-time visitors, canal cruises, flowers, walking tours and a balanced Bruges trip
Good to know: weather can still be mixed, so bring layers
My verdict: the season I’d recommend first if you’re unsure when to visit, you can’t go wrong with a spring trip in my opinion!

Spring is one of the best times to visit Bruges.

March starts to pull the city out of winter, April brings more spring colour to the city, and May is probably one of the strongest months overall.

If your timing lines up, late March and early April can bring daffodils around the Begijnhof, which is stunning to see in person.

This is also when canal cruises become easier to plan again. Bruges boat trips are guaranteed from early March through mid-November, although individual companies can adjust their hours depending on weather and demand.

In other words, best to go when they’re guaranteed if it’s on your bucket list.

What to Do in Bruges in Spring

Windmill Walk (De Vesten City Ramparts) (1)

In spring, I’d focus on:

If you’re visiting in May, check the date for the Procession of the Holy Blood, one of Bruges’ major annual traditions. The next procession is scheduled for Thursday 6 May.

P.S. – Spring is a great time to book a Bruges walking tour with a chocolate tasting and canal cruise included. You get the city context, the main sights, a small chocolate tasting and the canal views without having to piece everything together yourself.

Is April a Good Time to Visit Bruges?

Bruges horse walking down street

Yes, April is one of the best months to visit Bruges.

It’s a good choice if you want spring flowers, canal cruises, walkable weather and fewer crowds than summer. You may still get rain, but Bruges is not the kind of city where grey skies ruin everything.

bruges canal tour landscape

In April, I’d plan your day around walking, cafés, chocolate shops, canal views and the Begijnhof if the daffodils are still out.

Is May a Good Time to Visit Bruges?

Bruges

Yes, May is one of the best times to visit Bruges, especially for a first trip.

The days are longer, the weather is usually easier, canal cruises are running and the city feels lively without quite tipping into full summer crowds.

May is also good if you’re combining Bruges with Brussels, Ghent or Antwerp.

I’d still book your Bruges hotel ahead though, especially if you’re visiting over a weekend or around a public holiday.

Summer in Bruges: June, July and August

Rozenhoedkaai (1)

Best for: long days, warm weather, outdoor plans and a wider Belgium trip
Good to know: Bruges gets busy in summer, especially around the main sights
My verdict: still worth it if summer is when you can go, but plan properly.

Summer is the busiest time to visit Bruges.

It’s also the season with the easiest weather (on paper, you never know with Belgium).

Here you’ll get long days, outdoor terraces, canal cruises, warm walks, more energy in the city and a good fit for a wider trip if you’re combining Bruges with Brussels, Ghent or other European stops.

But Bruges is definitely busier in summer. Markt gets busy. Rozenhoedkaai gets busy. Canal cruise queues can get busy. Restaurants book up.

That doesn’t mean summer is bad. It just means going in with more of a plan for your one day in Bruges or two days in Bruges.

What to Do in Bruges in Summer

What to Do in Bruges in Summer

In summer, I’d focus on:

If you’re visiting in July, check whether Cactusfestival is on during your dates. This year’s festival runs from 10–12 July in Minnewaterpark.

Bruges also has free open-air concerts during spring and summer. Usually, the programme runs from April to September at locations including Burg, Markt and Koningin Astridpark, check their current calendar before your trip!

Is August a Good Time to Visit Bruges?

Markt

August can be a good time to visit Bruges if your dates are fixed.

But would I choose it first? Probably not.

The weather is better, yes, but it’s also peak travel season. Expect more people, more hotel demand (so definitely book your hotel stay in advance), busier restaurants and less chance of wandering into the main sights without crowds.

Autumn in Bruges: September, October and November

Best for: cafés, beer, museums, food, autumn walks and a slower Bruges trip
Good to know: weather can turn, so keep some indoor stops handy
My verdict: my pick if you want a quieter, more autumnal version of Bruges.

Autumn suits Bruges.

Given the city already has canals, cobbles, old brick, beer bars and chocolate shops, a little cooler weather doesn’t feel out of place here.

September is the easiest autumn month. You still have a good chance of decent walking weather, but the city should feel less intense than July or August.

And October is when it gets all the more cosy—with Bruges cafés, museums, Belgian beer, food, chocolate shops, and canal walks with an autumn leaf or two in the backdrop.

November is more hit-or-miss. Early November can be wet and grey. Late November gets more interesting if the winter season has started.

What to Do in Bruges in Autumn

Groeningemuseum

In autumn, I’d focus on:

Is September a Good Time to Visit Bruges?

October Bruges

Yes, September is a very good time to visit Bruges.

It’s one of the best shoulder-season months: less intense than summer, still comfortable for walking, and a good time for canal cruises, cafés and a wider Belgium trip.

If you’re choosing between August and September, I’d choose September.

Is October a Good Time to Visit Bruges?

Yes, October is a good time to visit Bruges if you like autumn city breaks.

I’d choose October for cafés, beer, museums, chocolate shops, dinner and slower wandering rather than trying to make it feel like a summer trip.

Pack layers and shoes that can handle wet cobbles!

Is November a Good Time to Visit Bruges?

November is not my top pick for a first Bruges trip, but it can still work.

Early November can be cold, grey and wet. But late November becomes much more appealing once Winter Glow begins.

P.S. – This year’s Winter Glow runs from 20 November 2026 to 14 February, and here’s this year’s Christmas-market dates.

If you’re visiting in November, I’d plan around food, beer, museums, cafés and a central hotel rather than making your whole trip depend on perfect walking weather.

Winter in Bruges: December, January and February

Bruges in December

Best for: Christmas markets, hot chocolate, festive lights, museums, beer and cosy dinners
Good to know: January and February can be quieter, and canal-boat companies and other seasonal attractions reduce their schedules during the holiday season. Check each museum and attraction individually before visiting!
My verdict: December is the winter month I’d choose.

Winter Bruges comes in two different versions.

There’s Christmas in Bruges, which is late November and December into early January.

For me, Christmas in Bruges is the one I’d travel for.

Bruges already has the bones for it: medieval streets, chocolate shops, old squares, warm cafés and hotels close enough to the centre that you can dip in and out of the cold.

January and February are good if you want fewer crowds, but less ideal if you’re hoping for the full postcard-plus-canal-cruise version of Bruges.

What to Do in Bruges in Winter

Bruges in winter

In winter, I’d focus on:

P.S. – If you’re visiting for Christmas markets, book your hotel earlier than you think you need to. Bruges is not a huge city, and the central stays are the ones you’ll want in winter.

Is December a Good Time to Visit Bruges?

Is December a Good Time to Visit Bruges?

Yes, December is a very good time to visit Bruges if you want a festive trip.

This is the month for Christmas markets, Winter Glow, hot chocolate, beer, chocolate shops, lights and cosy Bruges dinners.

It will be busy, especially on weekends and around the main festive areas, but that’s part of the December trade-off.

Is January a Good Time to Visit Bruges?

Bruges cafés for when it gets cold!

January can be a good time to visit Bruges if you want fewer crowds, but it’s not the month I’d choose first.

After the Christmas holidays, parts of the tourism scene can quieten down, and canal-boat companies and some seasonal attractions may reduce their schedules, while museums have their own weekly and holiday closing days. The best good news would be that you can still go to Winter Glow.

If January is when you can go, I’d plan it as a slower Bruges break: cafés, museums, beer, food, chocolate and calm walks rather than a packed outdoor sightseeing itinerary.

Is February a Good Time to Visit Bruges?

February is one of the quieter times to visit Bruges.

That can be a positive if you hate crowds, but I wouldn’t pick it over spring for a first trip unless your dates are fixed.

Canal-boats are more variable in winter and the days are shorter, so I’d build the trip around Bruges cafés, museums, Belgian food and beer, and an overall much quieter version of Bruges. You may also be able to catch the last bits of Winter Glow!

Bruges Month by Month

Minnewater

Bruges in January

Good for fewer crowds, cafés, museums, beer and a slower winter trip. Less ideal if you want more sightseeing.

Bruges in February

Quiet and cold. I’d go if you want a calmer city break, not if you’re desperate for canal boats and long outdoor days.

Bruges in March

The start of spring. Canal cruises become easier to plan again, and late March can bring daffodils around the Begijnhof.

Bruges in April

One of the best months to visit Bruges, with spring flowers, canal cruises, lovely walking weather and fewer crowds than summer.

Bruges in May

One of my top picks. Longer days, better weather, canal cruises, walking tours and all you need for a fabulous first trip.

Bruges in June

Warmer, lively and good for outdoor plans. A nice summer month before the busiest part of the school-holiday season comes in (i.e. more crowds).

Bruges in July

Busy but fun if you plan well. Look out for Cactusfestival in Minnewaterpark to see if your dates match.

Bruges in August

Peak summer. Go if your dates are fixed, but I’d absolutely stay overnight, start early and book any Bruges restaurants in advance.

Bruges in September

One of the best months overall. Still good for walking and canals, but less intense than peak summer.

Bruges in October

Great for autumn cafés, beer, museums, food and moody canal walks. Pack for mixed weather.

Bruges in November

A mixed month. Early November can be grey, but late November gets better if the winter season begins.

Bruges in December

Best for Christmas markets, Winter Glow, lights, hot chocolate, winter shopping and cosy evenings.

What If You Can Only Visit Bruges in Summer?

Still go, just be realistic about it.

Summer Bruges can be beautiful, but it’s also busy. I’d stay overnight, start around the main sights early, book dinner and give yourself one less-crowded thing to do, like the Windmill Walk or a brewery/museum stop.

I’d also avoid making your whole plan revolve around Markt and Rozenhoedkaai in the middle of the day. You won’t be alone!

What If You Can Only Visit Bruges in Winter?

Bruges Christmas Markets

Winter Bruges can be gorgeous, especially in December.

But don’t plan it like a spring itinerary.

Use cafés, chocolate shops, museums, beer bars and dinner as part of the trip rather than just backup plans. And of course, make sure to check out the Christmas markets and Winter Glow!

What If You Can Only Visit Bruges as a Day Trip?

Bruges canal views

For a Bruges day trip, I’d choose spring or autumn if you have control over the dates.

You’ll have enough daylight, better walking weather than winter and fewer summer crowds.

For one day in Bruges, I’d focus on:

Then add one seasonal extra if you have time, like seeing the daffodils at Begijnhof, choosing a guided Bruges tour with the boat ride and four-beer tasting option, an autumn walk in Bruges or heading to Winter Glow and the Christmas markets come the holiday season.

Best Time to Visit Bruges From the USA

Candace Abroad in Bruges

If you’re visiting Bruges from the USA, I’d choose spring or autumn.

Those seasons tend to work better for a bigger Europe trip because you’re more likely to want to pair Bruges with a Brussels, Ghent, Amsterdam, Paris or London trip too.

Spring gives you flowers, canals, walking weather and a good first-time version of the city, autumn gives you a more relaxed food, beer, museum and city-break feel, and December works if the whole point of your visit is Christmas markets.

Summer still works for a fabulous Bruges trip, but book things earlier and expect Europe’s biggest travel season to feel like, exactly that!

Best Time to Visit Bruges’ Christmas Markets

bruges in winter

For Bruges’ Christmas markets, I’d look at visiting for late November through December, but I’d confirm the exact dates before booking.

P.S. – The wider Winter Glow festival is on this year from 20 November to 14 February.

The two central Christmas markets are normally held at Markt and Simon Stevinplein and you can see the dates here!

This is the return trip I plan on making!

Bruges Tours I’d Book by Season

Candace Abroad on Canal cruise bruges

I wouldn’t force a tour into every bit of your Bruges trip, but the right one can be lovely. It was one of the best parts of my first visit to Bruges!

Spring

I’d personally book a walking tour with a canal cruise. Spring is ideal for being outside, and you get the main sights plus the canals without over-planning.

Summer

I’d book something early in the day, before the city is at its busiest. A morning walking tour with a Bruges local is the perfect antidote to the crowds.

Autumn

I’d lean into a local food tour; you’ll get to try 10 Belgian food and drink tastings and have an autumn walk around the city, all in one!

Winter

I’d keep it cosy with a brewery visit to De Halve Maan Brewery!

Final Thoughts on the Best Time to Visit Bruges & When I’d Go Again

Candace Abroad in Bruges

Overall, the best time to visit Bruges will totally depend on what kind of trip you want.

For the safest bet, go in spring or early autumn. For the warmest weather, go in summer but plan around the crowds.

For cafés, beer, museums and a slower trip, go in autumn. For Christmas markets and winter lights, go in December.

And if you’re wondering whether Bruges is worth visiting more than once, I’d say yes. Trust me, I’ve been twice and am still planning my Bruges at Christmas trip too.

Whichever you choose, you’re going to have a lovely time. Just don’t forget that umbrella, it’s still Belgian weather after all, and of course, always make time for a chocolate stop…
