The Isle of Wight has had a special place in my heart since 2018.

I’d planned to spend that summer in London, then applied on a whim to work at a summer camp in Bembridge and suddenly found myself living on the island instead.

2018 on the Isle of Wight!

I’ve been back since, and it still surprises me how little the Isle of Wight comes up when people talk about day trips from London.

Yes, there’s more travel involved than Brighton or Oxford. But if you start early and choose one part of the island, it can be such a fabulous change from the city.

Here’s how to do it for yourself.

Shall we?

How to Get From London to the Isle of Wight

Exploring the Isle of Wight from London is easier than it looks!

Start with a direct train from London Waterloo to Southampton Central. It takes around 1 hour and 17 minutes.

From the station, take a quick QuayConnect down to Town Quay. It runs between Southampton Central and the Red Funnel ferry terminals, and it’s free if you already have a Red Funnel ticket or a through rail ticket to East or West Cowes.

Isle of Wight Ferry

For this trip, I took the Red Funnel Red Jet from Southampton to West Cowes. It’s the high-speed foot-passenger ferry, and the crossing takes around 28 minutes.

And from West Cowes, you can carry on towards Osborne!

West Cowes to Osborne

Once you arrive in West Cowes, the easiest public-transport route is to cross the River Medina to East Cowes on the Cowes Floating Bridge, then take Southern Vectis route 4 or 5 to Osborne. The bus from East Cowes to the estate is only around five minutes.

So if Osborne is the reason you’re coming, think of it as: London Waterloo → Southampton → Red Jet to West Cowes → short onward connection to Osborne.

Can You Do the Isle of Wight as a Day Trip From London?

Isle-of-Wight_7641_Original

Yes—but I would choose one version of the island and enjoy it.

On my trip, that meant Osborne. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert used it as their private seaside home, and between the house, gardens and beach, there’s enough here to make it your main event for the day rather than a quick stop.

If you’d rather have a seaside day, I’d choose Shanklin or Sandown and keep the day around the beach, lunch and a wander.

Another One-Day Isle of Wight Itinerary: Bembridge + Shanklin

Bembridge on the Isle of Wight

If you’ve already done Osborne—or history simply isn’t why you crossed the Solent—I’d make a second day about the east coast.

Bembridge is where I lived in 2018, so I’m biased, but it’s a lovely contrast to the busier seaside towns. Give yourself a little time around the village and coast, then continue towards Shanklin.

In Shanklin, you can split the afternoon between Shanklin Chine, the Old Village and Shanklin Beach. But in this case you may want to stay overnight!

More Things to Do on the Isle of Wight With a Weekend

Carisbrooke Castle
  • Isle of Wight Steam Railway for a heritage train ride through the countryside.
  • The Needles for the west coast of the Isle of Wight—I’d give this its own half or full day rather than squeezing it around Osborne.
  • Ventnor for a slower south-coast afternoon, especially if you’re staying at The Royal Hotel.
  • Carisbrooke Castle if you want another history stop after Osborne.
  • Cowes for sailing, harbour views and an easy wander around town.

The most important piece of advice I could give you is: don’t try to do the whole island at once, and you won’t be disappointed.

Final Thoughts: Is London to the Isle of Wight Worth It?

Isle-of-Wight

I think so.

Of course I’m biased. Living here in 2018 means the island will probably always feel a little personal to me.

But there’s also something lovely about leaving London Waterloo, crossing the Solent by ferry and arriving somewhere that feels much farther from the capital than it really is.

For a day trip, choose one place. For a weekend, choose two areas and leave room for the beach, a long lunch or whatever makes you stop checking the time.

Happy travels,

Isle of Wight Ferry

Is the Isle of Wight a Day Trip From London?

Yes. I’d make one place—such as Osborne or Shanklin—the centre of the day rather than trying to cross the entire island.

How Long Does London to the Isle of Wight Take?

For the route I took, the London Waterloo–Southampton Central train averages around 1 hour and 17 minutes, and the Red Jet from Southampton to West Cowes takes around 28 minutes. I’d add time for QuayConnect and your onward island connection, plus a sensible buffer between each leg.

Yes. Just drive to one of the mainland ferry terminals and take a vehicle ferry across. Southampton → East Cowes, Portsmouth → Fishbourne and Lymington Pier → Yarmouth are the main options. Can You Fly From London to the Isle of Wight?

No! There’s no scheduled commercial flights from London to the Isle of Wight, your best bet is a train, coach or car plus a ferry.
