Step 1: Treat it Like a Job

You can’t get anywhere with a goal if you don’t take it seriously, and that includes your goal to be consistent on Instagram.

I always think about anything content creation from the lens of treating it like a job, because we take our jobs seriously!

Apply the same energy you would to employment that pays the bills to creating and publishing content online and I promise your mindset towards creating content consistently on Instagram will improve, drastically.

The next points I’ll make will be based off of this!

Step 2: Set Clear Content Goals

You wouldn’t start a job without understanding your role and what’s expected of you.

Likewise, on Instagram, you need to set clear, actionable goals for your content if you’re going to stay consistent.

Ask yourself:

💭What is the purpose of having a social media platform for me?

💭 Why do I want to be consistent on Instagram? What would that mean for me?

💭 What would my Instagram look like if I was consistent for a year?

Going into your consistency journey with a clear understanding of why consistency matters to you on Instagram will be invaluable to your journey.

In addition, you should also clarify what the purpose of the consistency is for you. Whether that’s:

➡️ Gaining followers

➡️ Increasing engagement

➡️ Promoting your product

➡️ Website traffic

Defining these goals will streamline your efforts and keep you focused on the tasks that contribute to your overall objective — being consistent on Instagram!

In action, when it comes to setting content goals, for me, this looks likes establishing what I’ll post, when I’ll post and how often I’ll post.

For example, your content goal could look like:

I will publish 2 Reels and 1 Static Instagram post every week at 3pm.
Rather than a fleeting 'I'll post more', it's a clear content goal which makes it a lot easier to stick to.

Step 3: Establish a Content Routine

Establishing great content habits will play a major role in your ability to stay consistent on the gram.

The habits of someone who is consistent on Instagram are:

  • Someone who batches their work – this means you’re doing filming, scripting, editing, scheduling and engaging as separate tasks that are the single focus for that work session
  • Someone who has a content calendar – i.e. a plan of what you’ll post week on week
  • Someone who sets aside time outside of their work and personal life for content creation – if you don’t plan you plan to fail, by putting your batch tasks for content creation in your calendar, you’re much more likely to stick to them

Take 30 minutes and establish what your content routine will look like for you. What days you will film, what days you’ll edit, and what days you’ll schedule are a great starting point.

Step 4: Create a Series

A bit of a random one, but I swear by this!

Creating a series on Instagram is a fantastic way to make sure you show up consistently.

What is an Instagram Series?

Any series that revolves around a similar topic, usually in a ‘part’ style.

For example, I have an afternoon teas in London series that does super well on Instagram.

From a consistency standpoint, knowing the exact topic I’m covering, how to shoot it, edit it, and caption it (because I’ve done the same type of video tons of times before for the series) makes the content creation process x10 easier.

When content creation is easier, you tend to be more consistent.

The takeaway? Whatever your niche try to come up with 2-3 content series ideas you can start to help you stay consistent with your content!

Step 5: Create Over Consuming

One of my biggest tips for being a social media creator on any platform is to create before you consume.

If there’s anything you take away from this post, let it be this.

It’s incredibly difficult to be consistent when you’re constantly comparing yourself on social media and doubting your own content creation skills.

But if you’re setting consistent content creation goals and spending 80% of your time on creating content for your own platforms over consuming others, you’ll be well on your way to being a consistent creator. Promise.

Step 6: Check In-Weekly

checking in weekly instagram

To tie all your new shiny consistency practices together and hold yourself accountable, it’s time to establish a weekly check-in.

This is a time to review your social media content for the week and motivate yourself for the week of content ahead.

During this check-in you can note and track:

  • How many times you posted that week (vs. what you said you would post)
  • The best performing content of that week
  • Content ideas for the following week

Practical wise you can use a simple Notion templates, or a notebook to get started.

As long as you have a weekly calendared-in routine to take a close look at your content and your consistency on Instagram.

Step 7: Let Go of Wanting Perfect Content

perfection is a roadblock to progress

I don’t know about you, but anytime I found myself being inconsistent on anything, it was related to perfectionism.

Wanting to do be the best at something.

Wanting all my Instagram content to be well-received (i.e. perfect).

Wanting the algorithm to love me…finally!

But the truth is, none of these are guaranteed. Your content WON’T be perfect (even when you’re super established) and this mindset is holding you back from being consistent on Instagram and so much more.

Let go of the need to have the perfect filming equipment, content creation skills or confident to publish your posts.

In fact, if you’re 80% happy with it, 99% it’ll be good enough (I promise).

Final Thoughts on Being Consistent on Instagram (and every social media platform)

There’s a million ways to be more consistent on the gram, but in my opinion these ones will get you the farthest.

As someone who makes money off of social media for a living, including Instagram, I can guarantee none of it would be possible without consistency.

So, are you ready to take the leap?

Happy creating,
