Hotel Indigo Bath Review: A Jane Austen-Inspired Stay Near Bath Spa Station

Looking for an honest Hotel Indigo Bath review? Here’s everything I’d want to know before booking—from the walk to Bath Spa station and Bath-inspired rooms to breakfast, the gym, parking, Brasserie Beau and whether I’d stay again.

Hotel Indigo Bath is a hotel I’d recommend when you want your trip to Bath to begin five minutes after your train doors open.

Biasedly speaking, of course, because on my first overnight trip to Bath, this is exactly what I did.

At that point I was still in the very early phase of being gobsmacked by a city of honey-coloured Georgian terraces, crescents and Roman ruins.

Then I realised just how easily it could be reached from London, and I was hooked.

From the hotel, Bath Spa station is just 0.2 miles away. In other words, you’ll get off the train, walk five minutes, check in, and the Roman Baths, Bath Abbey and Thermae Bath Spa will all be right there waiting for you.

With that said, here’s how to tell if Hotel Indigo Bath is the right hotel for your trip.

Shall we?

Quick Overview: Is Hotel Indigo Bath Worth It?

hotel indigo bath

Yes—especially for a first trip to Bath, a short city break or anyone arriving by train.

The location is its unfair advantage, but I wouldn’t reduce the hotel to that. Hotel Indigo Bath sits inside an eighteenth-century Grade I-listed Georgian terrace, with 154 rooms that pull from Bath’s architecture, literature and slightly scandalous social history rather than defaulting to ‘generic chain-hotel in a city’.

Book Your Bath Trip

Where I recommend staying: For the most character, I’d choose No.15 by GuestHouse, Bath, set inside three Georgian townhouses on Great Pulteney Street with playful interiors and an on-site spa. For the easiest arrival by train, I’d stay at Hotel Indigo Bath; it’s a 5-minute walk from Bath Spa station with small Jane Austen touches alongside a modern stay. I’ve personally stayed at and highly recommend both.

Getting to Bath from London: Compare times and book your direct journey from London Paddington to Bath Spa—it takes around 1 hour 15 minutes and is a beautiful journey.

The attraction I’d book first: Reserve your Roman Baths entry ticket with audio guide. It’s an essential first-time Bath attraction, and arrival times can fill up quickly on busy weekends and holidays.

Visiting from London for the day? I’d choose this Windsor, Stonehenge, Bath and Roman Baths day tour if you want transport and all major bookings handled for you.

Staying longer? This Stonehenge, Avebury, Lacock and Castle Combe tour from Bath combines two prehistoric sites with two of the prettiest villages within easy reach of the city.

For a different view: Take this 30-minute scenic River Avon cruise for glorious views over Bath’s weir and riverside.

Stay connected: Set up your Europe eSIM before your trip. It takes less than five minutes, and you’ll have mobile data ready to use when you arrive.

For extra peace of mind: I personally recommend using VisitorsCoverage to compare travel insurance options before your trip—it’s my go-to for finding the right cover whenever I travel.

A Short History of Hotel Indigo

Hotel Indigo Bath

Hotel Indigo Bath

Hotel Indigo Bath opened in 2020 after a major restoration, but the building is much older than the hotel name on the door.

It occupies a honey-coloured eighteenth-century Grade I-listed Georgian terrace on South Parade and the building has hosted Sir Walter Scott, William Wilberforce and the Duke of York over the centuries.

Hotel Indigo Bath is part of IHG, so this isn’t an independent hotel. But it’s much more Bath-specific than a standard international chain.

On the contrary, No.15 by GuestHouse, Bath is independent, and my pick when I want odd art, Pantry raids and Great Pulteney Street character (read my full No.15 by GuestHouse Bath review if you’re choosing between the two).

The Location: Hotel Indigo As a Base for Your First Bath Trip

There are hotels where “near the station” really means a taxi, several road crossings and a suitcase dragged over half the city.

This is not one of them.

Bath Spa station is 0.2 miles from Hotel Indigo, or about a five-minute walk. The bus station is similarly close, while the Roman Baths and Bath Abbey are only a few minutes farther into the centre.

You’re also well placed for Thermae Bath Spa, Pulteney Bridge and lots of Bath restaurants and Bath cafés.

In other words, if this is your first visit, you could check in and follow almost everything in my one-day Bath itinerary without needing a taxi once.

Coming from London too? Here’s how to get from London to Bath.

The Rooms at Hotel Indigo Bath

There’s 154 rooms at Hotel Indigo Bath, but the most useful thing to know is that they don’t all look the same.

The hotel has five design stories: Romance & Mischief, Architectural Beauty, Literary Hideaway, Garden and the underground Vault rooms. The first three are where Bath’s social history really shows up—with playing-card details and red velvet for the old gambling-and-flirting side of Georgian society, books and writing desks for the literary connection, and more formal Georgian references in the architecture-led rooms.

Across them all, expect Hypnos beds, Egyptian cotton linen, Nespresso machines, air conditioning, high-speed Wi-Fi and spa-inspired bathrooms.

Breakfast at Hotel Indigo Bath

When it comes to breakfast at Hotel Indigo Bath, you’ll find yourself downstairs at Brasserie Beau…and it goes well beyond pastries and coffee.

The current menu moves from a full English with Cumberland sausage, smoked bacon, black pudding and Cacklebean eggs to avocado on sourdough with marinated tomatoes and poached eggs, alongside vegetarian and vegan cooked breakfasts, and eggs Benedict, Florentine or Royale.

With lots of continental bits too like fresh pastries, breads, fruit, yoghurt, cured meats, cheese and cereal, all locally sourced.

Brasserie Beau & the Bar

The main restaurant now is Brasserie Beau on the ground floor of the hotel, with contemporary British cooking, a south-facing terrace and a particular interest in dry-aged steaks.

There’s also The Jib Door tucked underneath the hotel—a speakeasy-style bar and lounge now used for private events and cocktail masterclasses (check them out here).

For your actual evening in Bath, I’d still look through my best restaurants in Bath and decide whether you want to eat at the hotel or make use of your absurdly central location to go elsewhere.

Facilities at Hotel Indigo Bath

The biggest thing to know is what Hotel Indigo doesn’t have: there’s no swimming pool and no spa.

That isn’t a deal-breaker in Bath necessarily given Thermae Bath Spa is around the corner, but it does matter if you’re specifically searching for a spa hotel (in which case—I’d look at The Gainsborough Bath Spa or The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa).

There is, however, a dedicated guest gym, open 6am–10pm, with a treadmill, upright bike, elliptical cross-trainer and free weights. The hotel also has free high-speed Wi-Fi, air conditioning, room service, connecting rooms on request and accessible rooms.

What About Hotel Indigo Bath Parking?

Candace Abroad on train

If you’re arriving by train, parking is wonderfully irrelevant, which is another reason I like the hotel.

If you’re driving, assume you’ll be paying for parking. The hotel currently has a small number of secure valet spaces for £40 per car per night, with pre-booking essential; I recommend calling beforehand.

For more straightforward parking, just head to Manvers Street Car Park and SouthGate Bath car park, both around two minutes away.

Manvers Street is currently £15 for 12 hours, or £15 per day on multi-day stays. SouthGate parking varies by vehicle.

If free parking is genuinely important, this probably isn’t the hotel I’d pick. My best hotels in Bath guide compares the easier options for drivers.

Final Thoughts: Would I Stay at Hotel Indigo Bath Again?

Yes, if it were my first stay in Bath!

I’ve returned to Bath multiple times since that first overnight stay, and it’d be hard to find one as convenient as Hotel Indigo.

It’s absolutely the one I’d send anyone who’s arriving in Bath by train, wants the Roman Baths and Abbey practically on the doorstep and accommodation logistics wonderfully sorted.

In short—five minutes from the station. Breakfast worth staying downstairs for. Bath references in the rooms. A gym if you care. No need for a taxi. And one of England’s loveliest cities immediately outside.

That’s a very easy hotel to recommend.

Have the best time in Bath!

Happy travels,

Candace x

Yes. I’d recommend Hotel Indigo Bath particularly for a first visit, short city break or train trip. I’ve stayed here myself and would return for the roughly five-minute walk from Bath Spa station, central sightseeing location and Bath-inspired rooms.

How Far Is Hotel Indigo Bath From Bath Spa Station?

Bath Spa station is about 0.2 miles from the hotel, roughly a five-minute walk.

Hotel Indigo Bath is a four-star boutique hotel. I’d place it in a polished, upscale city-hotel category rather than the full-service five-star spa-hotel you’d get with somewhere like The Gainsborough Bath Spa.
