If you’re considering a tulip tour in Amsterdam but want something lighter than a full Keukenhof day trip, this tulip boat tour is one of the prettiest ways to see the city from the water.

I did this Amsterdam tulip boat tour recently and really enjoyed it. The boat is lined with tulips, the route takes you through some of Amsterdam’s prettiest canal views, and because the group is small, it feels calmer than some of the bigger cruises in the city.

That said, I do think it helps to know exactly what kind of tour this is before you book.

If you’re mainly doing it for the photos, the setting is very pretty and it absolutely delivers on that front.

If you’re hoping for a more in-depth history tour of Amsterdam, though, this probably isn’t the cruise I’d prioritise first.

What the Amsterdam tulip boat tour is like

This particular Amsterdam tulip boat tour lasts one hour and leaves from just outside Amsterdam Centraal.

The boat is small, with a maximum of 10 guests, which I think makes a big difference. It feels far more relaxed than some of the larger canal cruises, and because it’s open and low to the water, you get a much better view of Amsterdam from the canals themselves.

But let’s talk flowers. The tulips are, of course, the main draw here.

The boat is dressed with them and it makes the whole experience feel special, especially in spring. It’s a very easy tour to enjoy if you want something short, scenic, and different from a standard sightseeing cruise.

You’ll pass canal houses, bridges, and some of Amsterdam’s best-known views along the way, with very light history and fun facts from the captain, overall a very pretty way to spend an hour in the city.

Is it worth booking?

In my opinion, yes—but with the right expectations.

This is best booked as a short scenic experience rather than a history-heavy canal tour. There is commentary, but the overall experience leans more visual than educational.

So, if your priority is:

seeing Amsterdam from the water
doing something very pretty in tulip season
taking a few nice photos
booking a smaller and more intimate canal cruise

then I do think it is worth it.

If, however, you are far more interested in Amsterdam’s history and want lots of detailed commentary throughout, I would probably choose a more traditional canal tour instead, like this one and keep this one as more of a spring add-on.

But let’s be honest. Who doesn’t love a good tulip photo…

Things to know before you go

There is no toilet on board

There are no bathrooms on the boat, so definitely use the facilities at Amsterdam Centraal before heading over to board (about 5 minutes from the boarding station). Since the tour is only an hour, it is manageable, but still something to prepare for.

Boarding takes a bit of care

Because the boat sits quite low, getting on is not difficult exactly, but you do need to pay attention.

The staff help you board, but I would still take your time stepping in and out, especially if you are wearing anything less practical on your feet. When I went, one girl did fall while getting on, so it is worth being a little careful here!

The best flower photo spots go quickly

One thing to know if you are doing this partly for the photos: the tulips are positioned more towards the front of the boat, so those spots are naturally the most in demand.

Depending on your group, you may be with other people who are also very much there for the photos, which is fair enough, but worth bearing in mind.

That said, the driver did encourage people to switch around and be considerate so everyone could get a turn with the better photo spots, which I appreciated.

So if getting a photo matters to you, I would:

arrive on time
board carefully but promptly
and be prepared to politely swap places during the cruise

My honest take on the Amsterdam Tulip Tour

Overall, I thought this boat tour was a very nice thing to do in Amsterdam during tulip season.

It’s short, easy to fit into a day, and genuinely beautiful on the water. I especially liked that it felt smaller and calmer than some of the other canal cruises on offer.

And for solo travellers in Amsterdam, I think it works especially well.

It’s a lovely way to spend an hour in Amsterdam, get incredible pictures, and discover the city from a whole new perspective.

Just take your time getting on the boat!
