Burnham Beeches Hotel Review: A Girls’ Weekend in Buckinghamshire

I’ll be honest—when I first heard “hotel weekend in Slough,” I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect.

But as it turns out, Burnham Beeches Hotel is not the Slough weekend you may have come to mind.

Tucked away in Buckinghamshire it’s a Georgian country house hotel with ten acres of grounds, afternoon tea, spa facilities, cocktails, lovely dinner, and bikes you can take out towards Burnham Beeches itself.

Why Book?

For an easy countryside-style hotel break near London and Windsor, Burnham Beeches has everything you’d want for a well-deserved weekend retreat, without needing to plan a big trip.

Just 35-minutes by train from Paddington on the Elizabeth Line (followed by a short Uber), Burnham Beeches Hotel works especially well if you want a relaxed girls’ weekend, a spa-ish overnight stay, a countryside break within easy reach of London, or somewhere with enough on-site to make the stay feel like the plan.

My personal highlight was the bike rental and riding over to Burnham Beeches, especially as the woodland has its own filming-location history too (cue Princess Bride and Harry Potter…).

The Backstory

The building itself dates back to 1727 and was once known as Cant’s Hill before later becoming Burnham Grove.

Over the years, it attracted well-known visitors, including poet Thomas Gray, and later became home to the Clifton-Brown family at the beginning of the 20th century.

By the 1960s, the property had fallen into disrepair before being bought and turned into a country house hotel in 1965. Today, after further refurbishment, it has 79 rooms and suites, with the Georgian manor-house feel still very much part of the experience.

The Rooms

I stayed in Room 260 during my visit which was comfortable, quiet and did the job for a short countryside stay.

Personally I’d say the real strength of Burnham Beeches Hotel is less about hiding away in your room all weekend and more about the full experience—afternoon tea, dinner, drinks, the spa/leisure side, the grounds and the access to Burnham Beeches.

Room categories include options like Hive Family Rooms and Oak Character Rooms leaning into the woodland setting of the area.

Food & Drink

Food and drink was one of the strongest parts of the stay in my opinion.

We had afternoon tea, dinner and cocktails during the trip, and all three were genuinely quality.

The afternoon tea made the stay feel like a proper girls’ weekend from the start, dinner was lovely, and the craft cocktails were a very welcome addition.

Burnham Beeches Hotel has a few dining spaces, including Brasserie 1727, The Arden Room, the Verdure Lounge Bar and The Tea Room, so you don’t need to leave the hotel to make a nice evening of it.

I’d especially recommend building your stay around afternoon tea and dinner if you’re coming for a short break.

The Spa & Leisure Facilities

The hotel has a spa and leisure side too, with an indoor heated pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and boutique gym.

It’s not huge, but it absolutely does the job for a short reset close to London.

The Area

The biggest surprise for me was how much the surrounding area added to the stay.

Burnham Beeches Hotel is close to Burnham Beeches, a protected woodland and nature reserve that’s been used as a filming location over the years, including for Harry Potter, Robin Hood and James Bond-related filming-location tours.

The hotel also offers bike hire, which I genuinely think is one of its best USPs.

It’s also within easy reach of Windsor, Windsor Castle, Royal Ascot and Legoland, so it works well as a base if you want to pair the hotel with a nearby day out.

The Service

Everyone we interacted with was friendly, but a special mention has to go to Harry and the gentleman at the front desk on checkout, who made the stay feel especially welcoming.

Who Should Book & Final Thoughts on Burnham Beeches Hotel

Overall this is a good choice if you want a countryside-feeling hotel break without going too far from London.

Personally, I’d book for a girls’ weekend, a couple’s night away, a relaxed spa-ish break, with a stay for 1-2 nights, especially if you want to explore more of the Beeches.

Between the warm hospitality, quality afternoon tea and dinner, craft cocktails, spa/leisure facilities, and the chance to bike over to Burnham Beeches, it feels like a hotel with much more of a story than you might expect at first glance.
