If you’re dreaming of London’s cobblestoned streets, breathtaking landmarks, and yes — perhaps even the occasional drizzle, moving to London may be on your mind.
I moved from the US (Florida and New Jersey) to London in 2016 and I’ve never looked back.
Since then I’ve built entire life in the UK, from getting my bachelor’s and master’s in London, meeting my partner and even starting a business!
But before you can start daydreaming of any Londoning, you’ve got one big V word you’ll need to tackle first.
Visas.
Today, I’ll be spilling the (English Breakfast) tea on how to turn your UK dreams into reality with 5 visa options to move to the UK.
Although there are dozens this is a good base to start from, leaving you armed with moving to London visa tips that even the King would approve of!

5 Visas to Move to the UK

1. Student Visa
Let’s kick things off with the Student Visa.
Perfect if you’re looking for a visa to move to London but you’re not ready for the commitment of a longer-term or career-based visa or are simply seeking education in the UK.
To qualify, you need to sport an acceptance letter from an institution, have your finances in order, and provide proof of your English language skills.
Once you do you’ll get your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), submit your online student visa application, and bam! UK uni here you come…
2. Government Authorised Exchange Visa
If you fancy a bit of cultural exchange then it’s time to enter the world of the Government Authorised Exchange Visa.
They’re a diverse lot allowed under this UK visa, covering volunteer placements, internships, and training programs (oh, my!).
Obtain sponsorship from an authorised body, gather your mandatory documents, and secure a tidy payment, ready for submission.
P.S. – Make sure to apply at least 6 months before your job or program starts!
3. Skilled Worker Visa
If you’re a well-seasoned professional the Skilled Worker Visa might be the right UK visa for you.
If you can snap up a job offer from a UK employer and pass the points-based system you’ll be well on your way to obtaining Indefinite Leave to Remain.
To start you’ll need a skilled role, the right salary, and a fluency in the Queen’s English (their rules, not mine).
After which, the application process will begin where you can upload all your necessary documents and get the final sign-offs for your contract to begin.
4. Family Visa
Be it a spouse, partner, or parent, if you’re close to someone in the UK there’s a Family Visa with your name on it.
Sharpen those pencil tips and fill out several applications; add a sprinkle of financial insight, and wrap it up with evidence of your relationship. Voilà!
Although I wish it were that easy, this visa has several strict requirements, so be sure to read up on your specific visa type.
5. High Potential Visa
If you’ve just left college and are looking for your ticket to the UK The High Potential Individual (HPI) Visa is your gateway.
The visa is reserved for talented individuals awarded a qualification by an eligible university within the last five years.
The visa typically lasts for two years, or three years for those with a Ph.D. and can be granted by applying and filling out an application online.
