If it’s your first time in Brussels, staying close to Brussels-Central Station makes your entire trip easier.

I’ve visited Brussels for one day, two days and longer stays, and experienced first-hand the joy of staying somewhere that makes it effortless to walk to Grand-Place before the busiest groups arrive, pass beneath the glass roof of the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert and stop at Manneken Pis.

It also means you’re never too far from the best restaurants in Brussels or beer-hopping around the city.

On my latest trip, I stayed at NH Collection Brussels Centre. It’s roughly a 10–15-minute walk from Brussels-Central, depending on your route and luggage (with closer options coming up).

I loved the grand 1920s building, central location and the top-floor breakfast room, with broad views across Brussels.

But for the shortest possible station walk, I’d compare Hilton Brussels Grand Place, ibis Brussels off Grand Place and Novotel Brussels off Grand Place. All three put you within a few minutes of the platforms.

For a more elegant neighbourhood, look at NH Collection Brussels Grand Sablon. For affordable design, I’d choose Motel One Brussels. And for a family stay with an indoor pool, Novotel Brussels City Centre is a far better choice than a basic station hotel.

Getting to Brussels: Compare train times and prices for London to Brussels, Paris to Brussels and Amsterdam to Brussels, plus direct connections from Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp.

The tour I’d book for a first trip: I’d choose this 2.5-hour historical walking tour with chocolate and waffle tastings. It covers several of Brussels’ main sights, all while giving you an introduction to the city’s history.

Want to see Bruges and Ghent on your Brussels trip? I’d choose this full-day Bruges and Ghent tour; it includes a guided walk and free time in both cities, plus the option of a canal cruise in Ghent. It’s a packed day, but a beautiful one when your Belgium itinerary is tight and you’d rather leave the transport, timings and city introductions to someone else.

Brussels-Central vs Brussels-Midi: Don’t Book Beside the Wrong Station

One of the most confusing things you’ll find, but get used to, in Brussels is the way the stations are named. Including all stations referred to in Dutch, French and English.

Most importantly, Brussels-Central and Brussels-Midi aren’t the same station, and that will matter a lot when it comes to choosing a hotel.

Brussels-Central sits beneath the historic city centre. Victor Horta designed the station in 1937, but construction was delayed by the Second World War and completed by Maxime Brunfaut in 1952.

A stone’s throw from Brussels-Central, you’re instantly hit with Grand-Place, the Cathedral of Saints Michael and Gudula, Mont des Arts and Brussels’ museum quarter.

Brussels-Midi—also written Bruxelles-Midi or Brussel-Zuid—is south of the historic centre. It’s the Eurostar station, so that’s where you’ll arrive if you’re coming from London.

That doesn’t mean you need a hotel beside Midi. Hop on a local train or the metro, and in less than five minutes, you’ll be at Brussels-Central (see directions) and closer to all the main city sights.

In short, my rule: stay near Brussels-Central for a first city break. Stay near Brussels-Midi when Eurostar access, a very early departure or an overnight rail connection matters to you more than being close to Grand-Place.

1. NH Collection Brussels Centre: Where I Stayed and My Best Overall Pick

NH Collection Brussels Centre

Best for: first-time visitors who want a grand hotel, comfortable rooms, central sightseeing and breakfast with a view.

NH Collection Brussels Centre is where I stayed, and it’s still the hotel I’d personally start with for a first Brussels trip.

The hotel occupies a 1920s building on Boulevard Adolphe Max, with high ceilings, an original staircase and far more style than a standard city-centre hotel.

What made the stay great for me was how easily it fitted around my plans in the city. I could walk towards Grand-Place, the Bourse and Sainte-Catherine, then use nearby metro and tram connections when I wanted to reach Saint-Gilles, Matongé or the European Quarter.

But the breakfast room is really what did it for me. There’s a mix of pastries, fruit, cheeses, breads and hot dishes served on the top floor, with panoramic skyline views and a terrace that’s particularly lovely in warmer weather.

The only thing mildly confusing is the hotel’s name. In the name NH Collection Brussels “Centre”, “Centre” refers to the hotel being in the centre of Brussels, not attached to Central Station.

With that said, with luggage, I’d allow around 10–15 minutes for the walk rather than thinking you’ll step straight from the platform into reception.

I’d book NH Collection Brussels Centre when the hotel itself matters, you want a memorable breakfast, and you’re happy to trade the absolute closest station address for a short walk and stay with a bit more character.

2. Hilton Brussels Grand Place: Best for the Station and Hilton Honors

Hilton Brussels Grand Place

Best for: being the closest you can be to the station, a full-service stay, Hilton Honors members, connecting rooms and travellers with heavy luggage.

Hilton Brussels Grand Place should absolutely be considered for your trip because it’s directly opposite Brussels-Central.

You can leave the station, cross the square outside and reach reception without pulling your suitcase through half the city. At the same time, the Galeries, Grand-Place and the Magritte Museum are all within a short walk.

It’s particularly useful for American travellers if you collect Hilton Honors points, have status or use a credit-card programme that includes Hilton benefits.

The hotel also has connecting rooms, family rooms and an Executive Lounge with views across the historic centre. If you have an Executive Room or Suite (which you can often book with points), you can use the lounge for snacks and drinks throughout the day, with an evening happy hour too.

I’d choose the Hilton over my NH stay if you’re coming with children or several suitcases, if you’re arriving on a late train, or if loyalty benefits make the rate better for your trip.

3. ibis Brussels off Grand Place: Best Cheap Hotel Near Brussels Central Station

Best for: solo trips, short stays, early trains and spending more of your budget outside the hotel.

ibis Brussels off Grand Place is my straightforward answer if you want a cheaper hotel near Brussels Central Station without giving up the historic centre.

The hotel is around 200 metres from Grand-Place and about a four-minute walk from the station. It’s an exceptionally useful location for the price point. You can check in, leave your bag and be walking through the Galeries within minutes.

The air-conditioned rooms are modern and uncomplicated, with Wi-Fi and a 24-hour reception. You’re not booking a rooftop, spa or elaborate lobby, but it’s a lovely option if you want a clean base in the middle of Brussels and to keep the rest of your trip budget reserved for chocolate, restaurants and Belgian beer.

I’d book ibis Brussels off Grand Place for a one-night stay, a solo Brussels trip or to simply be close to Brussels-Central without the price point of the Hilton.

4. Novotel Brussels off Grand Place: Best Family Hotel Closest to the Station

Novotel Brussels off Grand Place

Best for: families who want more room with Brussels-Central one minute away.

Novotel Brussels off Grand Place sits beside Brussels-Central and is only a minute from Grand-Place.

This easily makes it one of the most tempting family hotels in Brussels, with 34 family rooms that can fit up to four guests and a central address that’ll remove a surprising amount of family-trip admin.

You can get everyone off the train and into the room quickly, return for coats or a rest without crossing Brussels and keep the main sights close enough that your younger travellers won’t spend the day asking how much farther they’ve got to walk…

I’d book Novotel Brussels off Grand Place for a family-friendly stay incredibly close to Brussels-Central.

5. NH Collection Brussels Grand Sablon: Best for Museums and a More Elegant Setting

NH Collection Brussels Grand Sablon

Best for: couples, museums, antique shops, chocolate and a calmer base above the historic centre.

NH Collection Brussels Grand Sablon is the hotel I’d choose when the neighbourhood matters as much as station convenience.

It sits on Grand Sablon, surrounded by chocolate shops, antique dealers and restaurants. The Magritte Museum, Musical Instruments Museum, Mont des Arts and Place Poelaert are all nearby.

The hotel is around an eight-to-ten-minute walk from Brussels-Central, with contemporary and spacious rooms and the option to book a view over the square. There’s also a 24-hour gym, a bar, Hispania Brasserie and indoor parking.

NH Collection Brussels Centre vs NH Collection Brussels Grand Sablon

Although they’re in the same hotel family, NH Collection Brussels Centre and NH Collection Brussels Grand Sablon are very different.

NH Collection Brussels Centre is better for the lower city around Grand-Place, the Bourse and Sainte-Catherine. It’s also the one with the top-floor breakfast room I loved.

NH Collection Brussels Grand Sablon is better for museums, Sablon evenings and a more polished immediate neighbourhood.

I’d choose the Centre property again for my kind of first trip: sightseeing, cafés, restaurants and moving between several parts of Brussels. Choose Grand Sablon for a couple’s weekend, a museum-focused visit or a calmer, ever-so-slightly less touristed area to return to in the evening.

6. Motel One Brussels: Best Affordable Design Hotel

Motel One Brussels

Best for: solo travellers, friends’ trips, stylish value and anyone who’ll actually use the hotel bar.

If you’re wondering, “Is there a nice but not wildly expensive design hotel in Brussels?”

Yes—Motel One Brussels! And it’s about a 10-minute walk from Brussels-Central.

It sits on Rue Royale near the Cathedral of Saints Michael and Gudula and Brussels Park, with interiors inspired by Brussels lace and royal imagery, plus murals mixing comics, street art and pop culture.

There’s also a wide Belgian beer menu, a spacious lounge and a green courtyard fit for evening drinks.

That location also works nicely with the Brussels Comic Strip Walk, the cathedral and the Royal Quarter. You’re still within walking distance of Brussels-Central, but you’re not staying in the immediate Grand-Place orbit.

I’d book Motel One Brussels for a hotel near Brussels-Central that feels considered without paying for a full luxury stay.

7. Novotel Brussels City Centre: Best for Families Who Want a Pool

Novotel Brussels City Centre

Best for: families, sofa-bed rooms, an indoor pool and evenings around Sainte-Catherine.

Novotel Brussels City Centre is the one I’d save if you’re looking for more from a hotel than a central bed.

It overlooks the Sainte-Catherine area, a district historically connected to Brussels’ old fish market and still known for its seafood restaurants. Grand-Place is around five minutes away, while Brussels-Central is roughly a ten-minute walk.

I’d book Novotel Brussels City Centre for its heated indoor pool, fitness centre, breakfast buffet, children’s menu and public parking nearby.

On the other hand, choose Novotel Brussels off Grand Place when getting off the train and into your room as quickly as possible matters more.

What About The Hoxton Brussels?

The Hoxton Brussels

The Hoxton Brussels is the hotel I’d save for design, views and a livelier stay—but I wouldn’t rank it among the main hotels closest to Brussels Central Station.

It’s perched above the Botanical Garden and Le Botanique, with 198 rooms on the upper floors, a double-height lobby and 1970s-inspired interiors full of warm wood, bold stripes and velvet.

There’s also the Working From coworking space, Peruvian-inspired food at Cantina Valentina and Tope on the rooftop for Mexican-inspired food, cocktails and lush views over Brussels.

It’s a lovely option, just not the one I’d choose when the station is the priority (12 minutes door-to-door from the hotel to the station by metro—see directions—or an 18-minute walk).

I’d book The Hoxton Brussels for the tried-and-true cool Hoxton atmosphere and rooftop—not because you want to step out of Brussels-Central and immediately check in.

Is Brussels Central Station a Good Area to Stay In?

Yes—especially on a first visit.

The station sits between several areas you’ll probably already have on your itinerary. Grand-Place and the Galeries are downhill, Mont des Arts rises above the station and the museum quarter continues towards the Royal Palace of Brussels.

The only thing I’d keep in mind when staying near any station in Brussels is pickpocketing, as with any big European city. Keep your phone and wallet secure, stay aware around the station and be sure to check directions before you start your journey.

If you’re doing a day trip to Brussels, you can also leave your belongings in the station’s luggage storage for just a few euros.

Tips for Booking a Hotel Near Brussels Central Station

Check the station name: “central Brussels” or “Brussels city centre” doesn’t necessarily mean the hotel is near Brussels-Central, and Brussels-Midi is a different station entirely.
Add time for luggage: Brussels has slopes, cobbles and busy crossings. A ten-minute walk on your phone can feel longer after a long Eurostar journey.
Compare loyalty value with the cash price: Hilton Brussels Grand Place may make more sense if you can use points, status or credit-card benefits.
Check the car park before arrival: NH Collection Brussels Grand Sablon has indoor on-site parking, and NH Collection Brussels Centre uses parking nearby.
Book early for major dates: central prices can jump during Christmas-market weekends, summer events and major concerts, especially for hotels close to Grand-Place.

Final Thoughts on the Best Hotels Near Brussels Central Station

If I were planning another first Brussels trip, I’d begin with NH Collection Brussels Centre.

The location worked for my stay, and I loved beginning the morning above the city. It’s not the smack-dab closest hotel to Brussels-Central, but I’d happily walk the extra few minutes for that top-floor breakfast again.

For the shortest full-service walk from the platform, choose Hilton Brussels Grand Place. For a lower price in almost the same location, compare ibis Brussels off Grand Place.

Choose Novotel Brussels off Grand Place for family rooms beside the station, NH Collection Brussels Grand Sablon for museums and the square, Motel One Brussels for affordable design, or Novotel Brussels City Centre for a family room and indoor pool.

Whichever one you choose, staying this central means you can leave the hotel and be in Grand-Place, the Galeries or Mont des Arts before you’ve even thought about public transport.
