Heidelberg had been in the back of my mind for yea Heidelberg had been in the back of my mind for years…I remember seeing a photo of the city in 2019, its castle overlooking the Old Town, the river and hordes of beautiful historic buildings, and immediately thinking, “I need to go there one day.” Little did I know that around seven years later, I’d finally visit with the very handy recommendations of a friend who’s lived and built a family in Heidelberg for years. A week back from my trip to Heidelberg (and my sev A week back from my trip to Heidelberg (and my seventh or so trip to Germany) and I’m reminiscing on all the little bits I love about the country, including…how they handle bottles! Here’s how it works: ♻️ When you buy many bottled or canned drinks, you pay a small deposit called Pfand. ♻️ Once you’ve finished your drink, you keep the bottle or can rather than throwing it away ♻️ Then you take the bottle-return machine at the grocery store, pop it inside and receive a voucher. ♻️ The voucher can be used towards your shopping or exchanged at the till. You’ll also sometimes see people leave bottles neatly beside bins instead of throwing them inside, so someone else can collect and return them, so a small way for people to earn a little extra money too. Personally, I think it’s such a clever system, and one of my favourite things about travelling: noticing the small everyday quirks that make you think differently about how things are done back home. East London was where my London life first began, East London was where my London life first began, so coming back always gives me a little wave of nostalgia for the younger (and potentially much cooler) version of me who lived here. If you end up East on a summer day, here’s how to spend it! 🚤 Hackney Wick — start with a waterside walk and stop at Barge East for a drink 🌿 Victoria Park — cross through the park and catch the Sunday food market if you can (otherwise walk a bit to the always on…) 📚 Broadway Market — browse the independent shops and bookshops, I really love the coffee from Climpson & Sons Café and The Broadway Bookshop here 🍛 Brick Lane — finish with curry and take your time choosing your winner… Fun fact: Because Brick Lane has its own little pre-dinner game: restaurants will start competing for your attention as you walk past. Hold out and the offers may move from 10% off to 20% off or even a free mango lassi…Hear them out, inspect the menus, then make your decision. Aladin was the winner for this night! Inside you’ll find the State Apartments, Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House and St George’s Chapel, where Queen Elizabeth II, Henry VIII and several other monarchs are buried. And because the castle is still used for State Visits, royal ceremonies and official events, it’s definitely somewhere to plan to visit vs. just rocking up! P.S. — I was graciously invited by the @royalcollectiontrust , which is why I was allowed to capture the interior clips you see in this video. Underrated places in Europe I’ve loved recently Underrated places in Europe I’ve loved recently (because it’s not all about Paris and Santorini!)—with a few of my favourite things to do in each 📌 🇪🇸 GIJÓN, NORTHERN SPAIN Tucked in Northern Spain Gijón is a coastal city in Asturias, and such a good one if you want a totally different side of Spain from the usual Barcelona/Madrid/Andalusia route. Think city beaches, colourful old fishing-quarter streets, Roman ruins, Asturian cider culture and some of the freshest seafood I’ve had in Spain. My favourite things to do: 🌊 Walk along Playa de San Lorenzo 🏘️ Wander through Cimavilla, the old fishing quarter 🍽️ Go for dinner and cider at Tierra Astur 🌿 Head up to Cerro de Santa Catalina for views or Laboral City of Culture in Gijón for history 🦞 Have a seafood lunch if you can—Los Pisones was incredible 🇲🇹 MALTA Malta is a tiny island country in the Mediterranean between Sicily and North Africa, with layers of history from the Knights of St John to British rule, it’s so much more than just a beach trip. My favourite things to do: 👩🏽‍🍳 Take a Maltese cooking class with Pippa Mattei 🍷 Go wine tasting at Meridiana Wine Estate 🌅 Have dinner with Valletta views 🛥️ Take a boat trip to St Peter’s Pool 🏛️ Leave time for Valletta—it’s far too good to rush 🇬🇷 AEGINA, GREECE One of the Saronic Islands, just a ferry ride from Athens, and perfect if you want a short Greek island escape, with ancient ruins, a sweet little port town, seaside restaurants and glorious My favourite things to do: 🏘️ Wander Aegina Town 🏛️ Visit the Temple of Aphaia 🥜 Try all things pistachio 🍽️ Stay for a lush seafood lunch at AMMOS in the port town if you have time So, which would go for…a weekend in Northern Spain, cooking classes and a winery break in Malta or a sunny Greek island day trip? 📌 SAVE this for your next Europe trip!
