When I was 18 I thought by 25 I’d have it all figured out.
I mean, 25 is halfway to your 50s! You’re bound to have your life figured out by now, your first ‘big girl’ job, a lover perhaps?
Well…if you couldn’t read the room writing this at 25 I most definitely do not have my life figured out.
I quit the ‘big girl job’ and went on my own path instead, I traded my 20s hookups era for a German/British man who now shares the same bathroom as me, and even after getting a master’s degree, the want to continue my education is slowly creeping back up (even though I said I was done with school).
All that to say, I think there’s a lot of pressure we put on ourselves as 25-year-olds to have our life be completely aligned with ‘what we thought it would look like at 18’, but in truth — sometimes it’s completely different, and that’s for the best.
With that said, there’s still a lot I’ve learned up until this point; things that 18 to 24-year-old me needed just a bit more maturity to understand. And now, we do.
Here’s 25 life lessons I’ve learned at 25.
25 Life Lessons You Learn at 25

1. Highschool Never Mattered Anyway
To those of you who loved your high school experience, you may want to skip this part.
But high school for me was a time when I completely traded my love of academics for the want to be cool and liked.
If I could go back, I’d tell myself there’s really no point in putting so much emphasis on your high school experience, as nothing (truly nothing) about it will shape what your life looks like as an adult.
At 25 I see that fully clearly now, that whether you had the most amazing or most terrible high school experience, or something in between — your adulthood is truly defined by you now and nothing else.
2. Make Friends Around Your Values
In university, pretty much anyone I talked to was a worthy candidate for a new friend. But at 25 I’ve become extremely selective with who I dedicate my time to.
The truth is, as you age in your 20s you (hopefully) get to know yourself a little bit better every day, and probably have some clear values established.
Because of this, letting in people in your life that don’t align with your values and best self just doesn’t make sense anymore.
And at 25 you deserve to spend your time with like-minded friends who make you better, not worse.
3. Not All Friendships Last Forever
From 18 until now I’ve had some friendships I genuinely thought would last forever fizzle away.
The truth is we change so much in our 20s (I know I have), and not everyone in your life will be aligned with the person you are today at 25 — and vice versa.
Letting go of friendships that aren’t healthy for you anymore is almost as difficult as heartbreak — but trust me, you’ll be better for it.
4. Remember, A Job is Just a Job
For most of us, when you first graduate or enter the working world there’s not too much to hold you down.
But at 25 you’ve probably got some new responsibilities, whether that’s renting on your own for the first time, student loan payments, increased bills — or if you’re an incredibly lucky Gen-Z/Millennial, your first mortgage!
All that to say, this can make the pressure of staying in your job feel even more heightened. But remember that a job is just a job.
Things your mental health, your family and friends, and all around enjoying your 20s should always be a priority above work, at least as much as possible.
At the end of the day, a job’s job is to pay you for the service you provide, and your job is to provide that service.
Not to stress and worry and overwork and people please. At 25 we’re past that, so remember, a job is just a job.
5. Your Body’s Not in Your Early 20’s Anymore
I was in self-denial long enough but eventually, it came time for me to admit that I simply couldn’t kick it the way I did at 21 at 25 (trust me, I’ve tried).
From the way you eat to the amount you drink — your body does start acting differently at 25 and your metabolism slows in a subtle way that can be hard to catch.
With all that said, this is truly the time to start eating better, drinking less, and overall taking care of your health for your 30s down the line.
6. Make Your Own Expectations
I think a lot of my late teens and early 20s were spent subconsciously doing things out of people’s expectations of me.
Whether it was for my parents, my friends, my teachers or just general society — there are certain decisions I made that were on the basis of pleasing someone else.
A life lesson at 25 I’ve realised is the best way to live is to set my own expectations for myself and stick to those.
Not only does it make me feel like I’m following my own path, but it also allows me to change my expectations easily if I feel they’re not serving me anymore — rather than constantly holding onto someone elses.
7. Call Your Parents
If you’re lucky enough to have both or one parents, 25 is when you realise aging is real and not everyone in your life will be around forever — including your parents.
For a long time I took having two parents that were alive and healthy for granted, but we truly never know how much time we have on Earth. Call your parents.
8. Have Standards in Your Dating Life (at every stage)
By no means am I saying 25 is the time to settle down and get hitched (unless that’s what you want!) but on my way to 25, I realised there’s no point in lowering my standards for my dating life, even in casual dating.
I think women especially are taught from a young age to put up with certain behaviors in the name of love (i.e. – He didn’t text you back? He was probably just busy.) but if a man in his mid-20s and beyond doesn’t know how to answer a text message, he’s most likely not worth a second date.
9. Remember Graduating University Doesn’t Mean You’re Done Learning New Subjects
If you think about it, you’ve been in a school setting since you were at least 5 years old — and you’re only 25.
Once you graduate, it’s easy to cast away learning and education as a thing from the past, but it doesn’t need to be.
Whether it’s taking a local language class, a writing workshop, or a new short course for something that interests you — don’t think because you’re done with ‘formal education’ that you have to be done with learning new subjects too.
10. Don’t Become Too Much of An Adult
At 25 there’s a silent pressure to be ‘an adult now’.
Of course, this manifests differently depending on where you live and the culture you come from, but if I know one thing about getting older it’s this quote.
“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.”
—George Bernard Shaw
While you’re adulting at 25, don’t forget it’s okay to still be a kid (and have fun).
11. Listen to Your Intuition (it was never wrong in the first place)
I truly believe that everyone has an intuition that speaks to us daily, but whether we choose to listen to it or not is a different discussion.
I’ve learned that hole in my stomach, that quiet voice that says something isn’t right for me isn’t something I should just silence — it’s something higher than me trying to lead me in the right direction, and it’s time to start listening to it at 25.
12. Take Risks (& play the regret game)
At 25 it can feel like you’re in the midst of making sure everything is perfectly set up for when you hit the big 3-0 (at least for me it does).
But if there’s anything I’ve learned from quitting my 9-5 and becoming a full-time travel blogger it’s that the best things in life are usually on the other side of taking risks.
Whether it’s starting a new job, moving to a new place, or finally being comfortable with living life the way you’ve always wanted to — you’ll never regret taking a risk at 25, even if it doesn’t work out.
Speaking of regret, with anything I’m dreaming of now I always play the regret game, which is awesome in helping me make decisions on what risks to take.
Simply sit down and imagine the best-case scenario of you following the dream you’ve been thinking of, if the potential outcome outweighs the cons, or if it’s something you think you’d look back on your deathbed and regret then you know the answer — it’s time to do it.
13. Learn What You Weren’t Taught in Childhood
Looking back there was so much I didn’t get the chance to learn from my parents.
But whether it’s financial literacy or sharing your emotions, by 25 it’s time to take the blame off of whoever raised you and take responsibility for learning the things you weren’t necessarily taught in childhood.
For me, this meant being better at communicating my feelings (especially with my partner) and being more financially responsible, choose what that means to you!
14. Don’t Keep Up With the Joneses
Given we’re all at such different stages at 25 it can feel easy to want to spend your big girl paychecks on keeping up with everyone on your Instagram story feed, but trust me — it’s not worth it!
At 25, we don’t need to keep up with the Joneses.
This is the time to keep the focus on ourselves and building our own dreams rather than looking to others. You with me?
15. Be Comfortable Being Alone
In high school and university, there’s a bit of a taboo around being someone who likes to be alone, but at 25 it’s time to embrace it.
With almost all of us in the working world, it can be difficult to have the same consistent hangouts with your friends as you did before.
But all that to say, as you continue to grow into adulthood being comfortable being alone and taking the time to really get to know who you are becomes your superpower, and makes you more interesting when you’re around people too!
16. Solo Travel Is Medicine
If this is your first time reading something of mine you should know I love to solo travel.
Dozens of solo trips later I’d learned solo travel is truly a medicine to me at 25, and it will be for the rest of my life.
The amount of things you learn and experience when you visit a new destination on your own is unmatched, so if you haven’t tried it yet I highly recommend it!
17. Self-Care Isn’t Pretty
There’s a bit of an Instagram and Tik Tok image now of self-care being about bubble baths and buying yourself expensive handbags, but a life lesson I’ve learned at 25 is that self-care isn’t pretty.
It’s facing your demons, confronting your childhood trauma, and choosing to love yourself through all of it.
Of course, treating yourself is always nice. But at 25 it’s important to really care for yourself through working through your own issues, not just putting a Band-Aid on them.
18. Specific Gratitude is Lifechanging
Gratitude is something that can sound really cheesy on the outside, but learning the life lesson on specific gratitude at 25 has changed the game for me.
Instead of saying ‘I’m grateful for my life’, make it specific…
“I’m grateful I can pay my rent without worry.”
“I’m grateful to be able to walk and explore the city I’m in.”
“I’m grateful to have a friend that truly loves and supports me.”
Making your gratitude specific will really force you to focus on the good in your life, in a way that is truly life-changing.
19. Talk to Yourself Like a Best Friend
Sad but true that we’re often nicer to other people than we are to ourselves.
At 25 it’s time to talk to yourself like someone you truly love and care about. Talk to yourself like you would a best friend!
20. Let Go of What’s Not Serving You
Not everything that served you in your early 20s will serve you in your mid-20s, or at any other stage in your life.
Letting go of what’s not serving you is an act of self-love and something you should embrace practicing at 25 (trust me).
21. Romanticise Your Everyday
Deliberately making my life feel like a movie has been one of the best life lessons I’ve learned at 25.
From playing a soundtrack for the backdrop of making coffee, going on main character walks, or journaling in a cafe — romanticising your everyday just makes life better, and is definitely a habit to take with you in your mid-20s and beyond.
22. Learn to Celebrate Yourself
In the journey that is our 20s, it’s easy to forget all we’re doing to make it in this world. We forget to celebrate ourselves!
I’ll admit, this is something I definitely struggle with still — but learning to celebrate yourself, even just for the everyday is a skill that’ll be valuable from 25 to the rest of your life.
23. Be Present
It’s wild to think about it, but the only moment that truly exists is this exact second.
The present is all that we have, and the more we give it away to anxiety and worrying about the future, the less we get to enjoy what’s in front of us.
Reminding yourself to ‘be where you are’ throughout the day will help you embrace being 25 every day.
24. Your Timeline Is the Only One That Matters
In life, there’ll always be someone who wants something different for your life than you do, but remember your timeline is the only one that matters.
If you’re a woman specifically, there’s a huge pressure on us to ‘do all the things’ by 30 — I think it’s part of the reason we can stress ourselves out so much at 25.
But remember your timeline is the only one that matters, both at 25 and always.
25. Remember, You’re Only 25
Despite what your brain may say, 25 is incredibly young, with plenty of time to try new things, make mistakes, and be whoever you want (or don’t want) to be. Embrace it.
To being 25!
