How to Do an Epping Forest Hike from London

Getting to Epping Forest from London

To do an Epping Forest walk from London, you’ll need to get to Theydon Bois Station on the Central Line.

It’s on the north-eastern portion of the London Underground, approximately 14 miles northeast from Central London, with trains leaving regularly from London Liverpool Street, Stratford, and any station with a Central Line — just make sure you’re going Eastbound towards Theydon Bois.

The Best Epping Forest Walks (+ Maps)

Once you’ve made it to Theydon Bois it’s time to start your Epping Forest walk.

Before you go I suggest picking which trail you want to do and following the corresponding map for each:

Most popular Epping Forest Walking Trails:

  • Oak Trail: A lovely circular, 7-mile walk that starts and finishes in Theydon Bois — this is the one I did! View Oak Trail Map.
  • Willow Trail: A shorter, 3-mile circular walk that begins and ends in Chingford. The trail offers beautiful scenery, including the stunning Connaught Water. View Willow Trail Map.
  • Holly Trail: This trail begins from the High Beach Visitor Centre and stretches for around 6.5 miles. It guides you through the heart of Epping Forest with some lovely sights along the way. View Holly Trail Map.
  • Chestnut Trail: For those seeking a long and challenging route, the Chestnut Trail is ideal. The 9.6-mile walk covers most areas of the forest with tons of natural beauty to capture along the way. View Chesnut Trail Map.

  • Epping Forest Centenary Walk: This is a unique 15-mile trail commemorating the centenary of the Epping Forest Act (built to preserve the forests’ natural beauty). The walk extends from Manor Park to Horseshoe Hill in Upshire, therefore it might be easier to break this into two or more walks. View Epping Forest Centenary Walk Map.

Keep in mind each trail varies in terms of difficulty level, length, and nature of the terrain. Always wear comfortable shoes, carry enough water, and snacks, and check the weather before you go!

Post Epping Forest Walk Pub

Once you’ve finished your Epping Forest walk it’s time to celebrate…with a pub!

The Bull pub is right near Theydon Bois station with excellent pub grub and pints, serving since the 1700s.

Perfect for celebrating your day of walking in Epping Forest before catching the tube back to London.

What to Pack for An Epping Forest Hike from London

🚶🏽‍♀️🚶🏼‍♀️ A Hiking Buddy: Even though these are relatively easy and populated trails I always suggest having a hiking/walking buddy when you’re going on a new trail for the first time.

🗺️ Downloadable Map: Make sure to download or take a screenshot of the trail map you’ll be using before you set off for your Epping Forest walk, some of the trails have no service in some parts so you’ll always want to have it handy.

🍎 Snacks: Stop by your local shop or the Tesco Express near Theydon Bois station before your Epping Forest walk to make sure you’re fuelled on your journey!

Other Bits to Pack:

Hiking Day Bag

If you’re going on an Epping Walk you’ll definitely want to pack a Hiking Day Bag.

Not only are they perfect to pack all you need for your hike, but they’ll distribute your weight evenly across your shoulders and back a lot better than a tote bag can.

Hiking Water Bottle

During your Epping Forest walk you’ll need to keep hydrated!

A big hiking water bottle is a must.

Portable Charger

Whenever you’re doing an outdoor activity (especially on trails) it’s important to remain charged. Always have a Pportable Charger before you head out!

Comfortable Hiking Shoes

Although Epping Forest hikes aren’t particularly difficult, comfortable hiking shoes will make your Epping Forest walk all the more enjoyable (trust me, you’ll thank me later).
