3 things to know if you’re moving from the US to the UK 🇺🇸✈️🇬🇧

Looking back there’s SO many things I wish I knew about moving abroad, especially from the states — here’s a few!

1️⃣ Salaries in the UK are a lot lower than in the US

For example, you could have a job in the states on $65k but you could be offered £30k over here for the exact same position.

Of course cost of living, healthcare and a whole other load of factors go into this, but just something to be aware of!

2️⃣ We both speak English but there is a learning curve 😅

From cilantro being coriander, zucchini being courgettes, eggplants being aubergines and ‘are you alright?’ being the most confusing sentence known to man — yeah, you’re gonna have a lot to learn

3️⃣ You still need to file taxes in the US every year no matter how long you live abroad

Trust me, I’ve been here 7 years and Uncle Sam never wants to stop knowing your business lol.

Also if you make above a certain amount, you’ll get double taxed (but that’s a story for a different day)

When someone says ‘City of London’, what comes to mind? If your answer is ‘business suits’ — then it’s time to change your perspective.

Here’s some lovely things to get up to in where London all began (previously known as Londinium!):

⛪️ Roam St. Dunstan in the East

A renovated churchyard from World War II now a tranquil garden & hideaway for Central Londoners

🌿 Check out the Skygarden

A completely free rooftop garden in the heart of the neighbourhood (make sure you book in advance)

🇬🇧 Visit the Monument to the Great Fire of London

The Monument to the Great Fire of London pays tribute to one of the most significant events to happen to the city (the Great Fire of 1666) and is a great place to soak up history — and views too!

🍷 Wine and dine at The Royal Exchange

Elegant and opulent, it’s an ex-1566 trading centre turned meeting place with luxury shopping opportunities, fine dining, majestic courtyards, and classy coffee and cocktails spots (with lots of City of London workers popping about)

🔍 Discover ancient ruins throughout the neighbourhood

In 200 AD, London was defined by one thing — a grand city wall. This stood time for over 1700 years, but they’ve left behind a few pieces.

Today you can find the Roman Walls in the City of London (the London Wall is the most notable) and scattered throughout surrounding areas

✨ Gawk at St. Paul’s Cathedral

A stunning Cathedral that took architect Christopher Wren 35 years to build!

🏙 Don’t forget to visit the Barbican Centre

The multi-disciplinary space is a hub for art & design, events and talks, cinema, theatre, dance and more, all under one roof (The Barbican Conservatory was closed when we filmed but 1000% worth visiting too! 🌿)

Of course there are THOUSANDS of things to do in London, but thought I’d start sharing some ideas every week to keep you going :) here’s 10!

🎡 The London Eye

Although it’s super touristy I still think it’s worth a ride once (Standard tickets are £30.50)

🌿 Skygarden

A completely free rooftop garden in the City of London — super popular now so I would book a few weeks before you go

🫖 Afternoon Tea

In the video is the @hotelkensington, @brigitsbakery and the @intercontheo2

🌹 Regent’s Park

One of my favourite parks to roam in London, especially the The Griffin Tazza and Queen Mary’s Rose Garden

👛 Portobello Market

Go on a weekday morning if you want to avoid the crowds! (although there won’t be as many shops open)

🌅 Parliament Hill

In Hampstead, great for bringing a picnic and taking in the view (P.S - you can grab food from the M&S down the hill in South End Close)

🇨🇳 Chinatown

London’s own mini Chinatown in the heart of Soho, with AMAZING food

🍻 Churchill Arms

Oddly enough they have great Thai food here, and is the perfect spot for grabbing a pint in Notting Hill

🌸 Kew Gardens

A wild botanic garden with over 500 acres to explore!

🛶 Little Venice

The ‘Little Italy’ of London, and a lovely place for a West London stroll

🏡 Notting Hill

Out of all London neighbourhoods Notting Hill is perhaps the most famous, iconically known for its role in the ‘Notting Hill’ movie with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant (and yes, I am a fan). Living here then, as you can imagine, feels like a bit like being London movie...and paying for it too.

🏡 Chelsea

Centered around King’s Road, Chelsea is one of London’s splashiest neighbourhoods perfect for those looking to have their ‘Made in Chelsea’ moment or live a life of ‘to see and be seen’

🏡 Hammersmith

Hammersmith is a trendy neighbourhood home to tons of young professionals enjoying West London living, a vibrant music scene and a riverside location

🏡 Fulham

Fulham is on the quieter side when it comes to West London neighbourhoods, with a village-like feel and lots of beautiful flats

🏡 South Kensington

Sprinkled in royal charm, perfectly manicured flats, world-class museums, and the beautiful Hyde Park — South Kensington is the very best of London neighbourhoods. A lifestyle here is expensive by nature, but then again, you are living in Kensington.

🏡 Hackney and Hackney Wick

Hackney and Hackney Wick are two of East London’s staple neighbourhoods and home to a bustling creative scene. From independent coffee chains to vintage shops, local breweries and riverside walks, you’ll find it all here.

🏡 Shoreditch

Shoreditch is an iconic East London neighbourhood with strong Bengali roots, an amazing food & nightlife scene and hoards of cool things to do

🏡 Stratford

In 2012, Stratford became home to none other than the Olympic Games and it’s been East London’s fastest growing neighbourhood ever since. From world-class green spaces to ample shopping opportunities — there’s a lot to get up to in the area.

🏡 Wapping

A former docks turned residential neighbourhood, Wapping is easily one of the most peaceful areas in East London. From traditional riverside pubs to chic bars and the beautiful St. Katharine Docks

🏡 The Royal Docks

This includes several neighbourhoods along the docks in East London (like Limehouse, Shadwell, Westferry, Poplar, Blackwell, East India, Canning Town, Royal Victoria, Custom House, Prince Regent, Royal Albert) connected by the DLR (Docklands Light Railway).

Present-day, the area is constantly popping up with new builds, stylish restaurants and things to do, while keeping its multi-cultural roots.

5 Neighbourhoods to Live in South London 🏡

Day three of celebrating my Renting in London Guide 📚 (link in bio!) with some more neighbourhood recommendations across the city. And today — we’re going South!

🏡 Greenwich

Greenwich is one of my favourite neighbourhoods in London and I lived here as well. It’s an area full of history and beautiful buildings, it’s right on the river there’s ample green space and I’d also recommend Blackheath nearby too.

🏡 Clapham

Clapham is home to thousands of 20-somethings and Millennials living their best London life (and a lot of Australians randomly 😂), there are tons of bars, pubs, and restaurants here and Clapham Commons if you’re ever in need of some quiet.

🏡 Richmond

Although it’s a bit far out, Richmond is a quiet, peaceful, safe, and beautiful neighbourhood in South west along the Thames. If you’re looking for a slow-paced lifestyle in the city I’d highly recommend the area. And Richmond Park is pretty amazing — plus Kew Gardens is nearby too.

🏡 Brixton

Right at the end of the Victoria Line, you’ll find Brixton. There’s a bit of everyone here now but the neighboruhood has very rich and beautiful Afro-Caribbean roots and it’s hard to get bored here! From Brixton Village to the food, to Brockwell Park it’s a really buzzing area.

🏡 Wimbledon

And Wimbledon. You may only know Wimbledon for the Wimbledon Championships, but it’s a lovely area to call home too — it’s super safe, lots of green space and has a big small town feel too it (and Putney nearby too!).

🏡 Hampstead

An incredibly biased recommendation considering I’ve lived here, but it truly is one of London’s most beautiful neighbourhoods. Filled with the glorious Hampstead Heath and a total village-like feel

🏡 Islington and Angel

Islington and Angel are some of London’s most beloved areas for their bounds of things to do, riverside walks and incredibly Central location

🏡 Muswell Hill & Highgate

When I think of charming local London neighbourhoods, Muswell Hill is what comes to mind. Although the neighbourhood doesn’t have its own Underground it well makes up for it with its hoard of lovely restaurants, shops, and 196 acres of Alexandra Park on its doorstep

Nearby is Highgate — set on one of the highest points in London, Highgate is a tightknit and local neighbourhood filled with green space and local independent shops & cafés and the famous Highgate Cemetary

🏡 St. John’s Wood

You may know St John’s Wood from the famous Abbey Road of course. But outside of its claim to fame it’s a fabulous neighbourhood for boujee expats & Londoners looking to live London life to the fullest

🏡 Camden

And lastly Camden, I lived here too and if lively London is what you’re looking for that is what you’ll here 😂 although there are tons of quieter side streets and of course, Primrose Hill only a short walk away

(Disclaimer: Of course living in Central London will be expensive! So I would either opt for flatmates if out of budget or stay tuned for my other videos in other areas across London 😊)

🏡 Bermondsey & the London Bridge area

Rebuilt after the bombings of World War II the neighbourhood is dripping in independent pubs, bars and cafés — just a stone’s throw away from iconic London sites like Borough Market, Tower Bridge and The Shard

🏡 Soho

Soho is easily one of London’s most buzzing neighbourhoods. It’s tucked in London’s vibrant West End and you’ll always find something to do here — from theatres to bars, clubs and a thriving LGBTQ+ community.

🏡 Fitzrovia

Fitzrovia is a very student-friendly neighbourhood mixed with everything from residential flats, to commercial areas, university halls, art galleries and is great for someone who wants to be in the centre of it all

🏡 Clerkenwell

Despite its Central location, Clerkenwell holds a local neighbourhood charm that’s difficult to find in the city centre. There’s a big creative scene here, independent markets and a very cosy neighbourhood vibe to the area

🏡 Marylebone

Marylebone is definitely a London neighbourhood to the boujee, filled with manicured streets and Baker Street and Regent’s Park on your doorstep

🏛️Have a wander through London’s best museums

My favourite are the @vamuseum and the @tate — but any will do! (plus, most of them are free :) )

📚 Mosey around your favourite bookshop

Like a rainy walk on Regent’s Canal before going to @word_on_the_water or a pop into @dauntbooks

🫖 Treat yourself to Afternoon Tea

For a unique afternoon tea experience try, the ‘80 Days Around the World’ at the Townhouse Kensington 🎈

Based on the adventures of Phileas Fogg their afternoon tea will transport you to flavours across the world from Yemen to India, Hong Kong, and Singapore

The experience is £58 per person and includes a savoury stack of treats from around the world, freshly made pastries, and of course, cakes and scones

It’s definitely on the fancier side and a bit of a different take from your average afternoon tea — but if you’re looking to treat yourself in West London or mix things up I definitely recommend (the staff is really kind too).

I’ve been so busy Londoning with you guys over t

I’ve been so busy Londoning with you guys over the past couple of months I forgot to share how I got here in the first place! Here’s my London (and life!) story:

1997 - 2015: Raised in Florida and New Jersey — always felt a little out of place in America, loved photography, broadcasting, and filmmaking, decided that wasn’t realistic so I would work in healthcare instead

2015 - 2016: Saw an ad on Facebook at 17 about people studying for free in Germany (mind-blowing 🤯), through retargeting saw an ad about studying in London. Decided I wanted to move to London.

2016 - 2017: Moved to London. Studied Public Health. Fell in love. Fell out of love. Worked a lot. Travelled a lot. Went to the SU (if you were ever a UK uni student you’ll know 😂) a lot! Realised I never wanted to leave London 2 months in. Started a blog and quit it a few months later.

2018 - 2019: Dated someone at a summer camp in the UK that passed away 3 weeks later, spoke at his funeral, and flew back to London. Moved to Shanghai for a year to fulfill a childhood dream. Realised my dreams weren’t unrealistic. And then…

2020: Cov*d hit. Ended up in Thailand for 6 months (long story). Decided to take Candace Abroad seriously. Learned everything I could. Moved back to London for my Master’s.

2021: Graduated, met my partner (from a Bumble-led Instagram message and a walk in Battersea Park). Started the London 9-5 life, grew my blog Candace Abroad, became stressed/overwhelmed, and burnout from balancing the two

2022: Quit my job and took the leap to take Candace Abroad full-time, business exploded, hired my first employees, realised my dreams weren’t unrealistic after all

2023: More good I hope! With lots of lessons in between. We’ll see what the year will bring 😊

So I suggest adding in neighbourhoods like Hampstead, Greenwich, Brixton, Richmond to really make the most of your trip and get different perspectives of the city :)

☔️ 🥾 Bringing rain boots

It’s just not a huge thing here, so I wouldn’t worry about packing them for your trip!

😅 Thinking all Londoners are rude

This is a huge stereotype in the city that I definitely don’t agree with — there are definitely rude people here (just like anywhere) but literally if you need directions or anything like that don’t be afraid to ask because people are generally happy to help — at least in my experience

3 Tourist Mistakes Not to Make in London 🇬🇧🙅🏽‍♀️ (part 2)

🚌 Trying to Get on the Bus With Cash

In a lot of countries you can only pay with cash on the bus so this is an easy mistake — but do this in London and the bus driver will probably just look at you like you’re crazy 😅 always make sure to have your Oyster or contactless card handy before you take public transit here

🧍🏽‍♀️🧳 Standing on the Wrong Side of the Escalator(especially if you have luggage)

Classic tourist mistake and very easy to avoid, just follow the signs. ‘Stand on the right and walk on the left’

🤔 Mistaking London Bridge with Tower Bridge

I think Fergie probably had something to do with this lol, but just as a reminder!

3 Tourist Mistakes Not to Make in London 🇬🇧🙅🏽‍♀️ (part 1)

Know a bunch of you have London trips coming up so sharing a 3 day series this week on the top mistakes to avoid while you’re here :) — here’s a few!

🎟️ Buying Individual Travelcard Tickets

Using paper tickets is 9/10 going to be more expensive than using just your Oyster or Contactless card so I would avoid them altogether during your trip

🐟 Only Eating British Food

I love Fish and Chips and a Full English just as much as the next person but London is literally one of the most diverse cities in the world so you are truly missing out if you don’t try the international cuisine while you’re here

🎭 Paying Loads for Theatre Tickets

In my opinion there’s no reason ever pay full price for theatre tickets in London, like ever. Just use an app called TodayTix — they sell last minute theatre tickets, lotteries for front-row seats (I literally saw Tina for £25 pounds, it’s amazing!)
